At least 40 migrants have died after a boat they were traveling in caught fire off the northern coast of Haiti, a UN agency said on Friday, with police saying the explosion was sparked by a voodoo ritual gone wrong.
The Haitian Coast Guard rescued 41 people, 11 of whom were hospitalized, including some for burns, the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.
However, “at least 40 migrants have died, and several others were injured,” the IOM said.

The fire began when a passenger lit a candle to start a voodoo ritual, police spokesperson Arold Jean said.
Survivors told local media that the voodoo ceremony was meant to bring luck and help the boat avoid being intercepted by the coast guard.
“This devastating event highlights the risks faced by children, women and men migrating through irregular routes,” IOM Haiti chief of mission Gregoire Goodstein said.
The boat, carrying more than 80 people, had left the port of Labadee on Wednesday en route to the Turks and Caicos Islands, a 240km journey, the IOM reported, citing the Haitian National Office for Migration.
“The search continues with the aim of finding other survivors,” said Jean, adding that an investigation had been opened to “identify and dismantle the networks that organize these clandestine voyages.”
Migration from Haiti has been surging for months, as thousands of people flee a spike in violence from criminal gangs that now control wide swaths of territory. The gangs have attacked prisons, destroyed dozens of police stations, and invaded the main airport, with the government’s hold over the country tenuous.
“Haiti’s socioeconomic situation is in agony,” Goodstein said. “The extreme violence over the past months has only brought Haitians to resort to desperate measures even more.”
Hundreds of police officers from Kenya have been deployed in the capital, Port-au-Prince, part of an international effort to bring stability to a country riven by political, social and economic chaos. Newly named Prime Minister Gary Conille, a former UN official, has welcomed the Kenyan contingent and vowed to launch a police operation against the gangs.
As the pace of emigration grows, Haitian Coast Guard units in the north have observed an increasing number of departures by boat, the IOM said.
More than 86,000 migrants have been forcibly returned to Haiti by neighboring countries this year, it said.
The attempted assassination of former US president Donald Trump by a shooter at a rally in Pennsylvania has confirmed the worst fears of public figures warning that an escalation in incendiary political rhetoric on all sides could lead to bloodshed. US lawmakers and analysts have been voicing concern since the Jan. 6, 2021, US Capitol riot that increasingly bellicose campaign language was becoming a worrying contusion on the US body politic ahead of November’s presidential election. The danger was vividly illustrated in 2022, when then-US House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi’s husband was attacked with a hammer by a far-right conspiracy theorist
A high-ranking North Korean diplomat stationed in Cuba defected to South Korea in November last year — just months before Seoul and Havana established diplomatic ties, the South Korean National Intelligence Service said yesterday. North Korean diplomat Ri Il-kyu had been responsible for political affairs at Pyongyang’s embassy in Cuba since 2019, tasked specifically “with obstructing the establishment of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Cuba,” South Korea’s Chosun Daily reported. Ri defected to South Korea with his wife and children in early November, making him the highest-ranking North Korean diplomat known to have defected since then-North Korean deputy ambassador to the

Detectives have been scouring the site in the Mukuru area of Nairobi since the mutilated corpses of at least six women were found on Friday in sacks floating in a sea of garbage. On Saturday, the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said that five bags had been retrieved from
Hong Kong microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung (袁國勇) has done battle with some of the world’s worst threats, including the SARS virus he helped isolate and identify, and he has a warning. Another pandemic is inevitable and could exact damage far worse than COVID-19 pandemic, said the soft-spoken scientist sometimes thought of as Hong Kong’s answer to former US National Institutes of Health director Anthony Fauci. “Both the public and [world] leaders must admit that another pandemic will come, and probably sooner than you anticipate,” he said at the city’s Queen Mary Hospital, where he works and teaches. “Why I make such a horrifying prediction
