Cooking gas caused a massive explosion at a barbecue restaurant in northwestern China, killing 31 people and injuring seven others during national celebrations on the eve of a long holiday weekend, authorities said yesterday.
The blast tore through the restaurant at about 8:40pm on Wednesday on a busy street in Yinchuan, the capital of China’s traditionally Muslim Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, as people gathered ahead of the Dragon Boat Festival, Xinhua news agency said.
The explosion left many people unconscious and they needed to be carried out of the shop, online news site The Paper reported, quoting a member of the search-and-rescue team.

Victims included elderly people and high-school students, it added.
An hour before the explosion, employees noticed the smell of cooking gas and discovered that a gas tank valve was broken, Xinhua reported.
The blast occurred while an employee was replacing the valve, it said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) demanded urgent medical care for the injured and a safety overhaul after the explosion, Xinhua said.
He called for efforts to quickly determine the cause of the incident and hold people accountable under the law, it said.
Xi said that all regions and related departments should address “all types of risks and hidden dangers,” and launch campaigns to promote workplace safety, it said.
The incident happened at an outlet of Fuyang Barbecue, a chain restaurant in Yinchuan popular for its grilled skewers and stir-fried dishes, The Paper said.
The two-story restaurant could seat 20 people on the ground floor and offered private dining rooms on the second floor, where customers could also sing karaoke.
A staff member in the emergency clinic at the General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University confirmed that some of the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital, but said she was not authorized to talk to media.
The Paper cited a woman identified by her surname, Chen (陳), as saying that she had been about 50m from the restaurant when she heard the explosion.
She described seeing two waiters emerge from the restaurant afterward, one of whom collapsed immediately, while thick smoke billowed from the restaurant and a strong smell of cooking gas permeated the area.
Search-and-rescue work at the restaurant was completed by yesterday morning, and investigators were working to determine the cause of the blast, the Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management wrote on social media.

BELT-TIGHTENING: Chinese investments in Cambodia are projected to drop to US$35 million in 2026 from more than US$420 million in 2021 At a ceremony in August, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet knelt to receive blessings from saffron-robed monks as fireworks and balloons heralded the breaking of ground for a canal he hoped would transform his country’s economic fortunes. Addressing hundreds of people waving the Cambodian flag, Hun Manet said China would contribute 49 percent to the funding of the Funan Techo Canal that would link the Mekong River to the Gulf of Thailand and reduce Cambodia’s shipping reliance on Vietnam. Cambodia’s government estimates the strategic, if contentious, infrastructure project would cost US$1.7 billion, nearly 4 percent of the nation’s annual GDP. However, months later,
HOPEFUL FOR PEACE: Zelenskiy said that the war would ‘end sooner’ with Trump and that Ukraine must do all it can to ensure the fighting ends next year Russia’s state-owned gas company Gazprom early yesterday suspended gas deliveries via Ukraine, Vienna-based utility OMV said, in a development that signals a fast-approaching end of Moscow’s last gas flows to Europe. Russia’s oldest gas-export route to Europe, a pipeline dating back to Soviet days via Ukraine, is set to shut at the end of this year. Ukraine has said it would not extend the transit agreement with Russian state-owned Gazprom to deprive Russia of profits that Kyiv says help to finance the war against it. Moscow’s suspension of gas for Austria, the main receiver of gas via Ukraine, means Russia now only
‘HARD-HEADED’: Some people did not evacuate to protect their property or because they were skeptical of the warnings, a disaster agency official said Typhoon Man-yi yesterday slammed into the Philippines’ most populous island, with the national weather service warning of flooding, landslides and huge waves as the storm sweeps across the archipelago nation. Man-yi was still packing maximum sustained winds of 185kph after making its first landfall late on Saturday on lightly populated Catanduanes island. More than 1.2 million people fled their homes ahead of Man-yi as the weather forecaster warned of a “life-threatening” effect from the powerful storm, which follows an unusual streak of violent weather. Man-yi uprooted trees, brought down power lines and smashed flimsy houses to pieces after hitting Catanduanes in the typhoon-prone
