There is no need for Taiwan to “pick a side” between the US and China, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun (鄭麗文) said yesterday, adding that while the former is a friend, the latter is "family."
Speaking at a meeting of the KMT's Central Standing Committee, Cheng said a friend once told her that the "United States was our benefactor, but the mainland is our family."
The Republic of China (Taiwan’s official name) would “not forget the friendship of the United States after World War II, because we are not ungrateful people," Cheng said.

At the same time, "the mainland is our family, and we won't be involved in an internecine struggle," she said.
"We don't need to pick a side between the United States and China," Cheng said. "Cross-strait reconciliation can bring about cooperation between the US and China."
Cheng's comments followed an announcement yesterday by the KMT that it would send a delegation to Beijing from Monday through Wednesday next week for an official think tank exchange with the Chinese Communist Party, aimed at fostering constructive cross-strait interaction.
The delegation would be led by Deputy KMT Chairman Hsiao Hsu-tsen (蕭旭岑), and would include Lee Hong-yuan (李鴻源), deputy chair of the KMT's National Policy Foundation think tank, as well as about 40 experts and academics, the party said.
Asked about the possibility of the KMT chair meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) this year, Cheng said there is no need for speculation.
A public announcement would be made immediately if such a meeting was confirmed, she added.
Before British Prime Minister Keir Starmer yesterday arrived in Beijing for a state visit, he said that "there is no need [for the UK] to choose between the US and China," Cheng said.
The same is true for Taiwan, she said.
More than half of the bamboo vipers captured in Tainan in the past few years were found in the city’s Sinhua District (新化), while other districts had smaller catches or none at all. Every year, Tainan captures about 6,000 snakes which have made their way into people’s homes. Of the six major venomous snakes in Taiwan, the cobra, the many-banded krait, the brown-spotted pit viper and the bamboo viper are the most frequently captured. The high concentration of bamboo vipers captured in Sinhua District is puzzling. Tainan Agriculture Bureau Forestry and Nature Conservation Division head Chu Chien-ming (朱健明) earlier this week said that the

The first bluefin tuna of the season, brought to shore in Pingtung County and weighing 190kg, was yesterday auctioned for NT$10,600 (US$333.5) per kilogram, setting a record high for the local market. The auction was held at the fish market in Donggang Fishing Harbor, where the Siaoliouciou Island-registered fishing vessel Fu Yu Ching No. 2 delivered the “Pingtung First Tuna” it had caught for bidding. Bidding was intense, and the tuna was ultimately jointly purchased by a local restaurant and a local company for NT$10,600 per kilogram — NT$300 ,more than last year — for a total of NT$2.014 million.
