Cloud Gate Dance Theatre (雲門舞集) is to present five works by choreographers from Taiwan and abroad for its “Spring Riot” program in June to showcase “the raw power and depth of movement,” the dance troupe announced.
“The choreographers are going back to pure physical movements. We call it ‘bare’ Spring Riot,” Cloud Gate Artistic Director Cheng Tsung-lung (鄭宗龍) said. “It is not a theme. It is plain and straightforward about works created with [dancers and their] body.”
The program, launched in 2001 to promote young choreographers, was revamped last year to support artists at all stages of their careers.

Cheng, who made his Spring Riot debut in 2006, said choreographers in the program have inspired Cloud Gate and taught dancers new techniques.
This year, five outside artists are being brought in to help choreograph the performance.
They include Hiroaki Umeda of Japan, LEE\VAKULYA — a Brussels-based duo formed by Taiwan’s Lee Chen-wei (李貞葳) and Hungary’s Vakulya Zoltan — and the heads of three local performing arts groups: Baru Madiljin of Tjimur Dance Theatre, Chen Wu-kang (陳武康) of HORSE and Yang Nai-hsuan (楊乃璇) of Les Petites Choses Production.
Cloud Gate, founded in 1973, was the first contemporary dance company in the Chinese-speaking world. They have performed in the US and the UK, among other locations.
This year’s Spring Riot performances are to be staged on June 21 and 22 at Cloud Gate’s theater in New Taipei City. Tickets are available on Opentix.
Taiwan yesterday condemned the recent increase in Chinese coast guard-escorted fishing vessels operating illegally in waters around the Pratas Islands (Dongsha Islands, 東沙群島) in the South China Sea. While CGA vessels were dispatched to expel the Chinese boats, Chinese coast guard ships trespassed into Taiwan’s restricted waters and unsuccessfully attempted to interfere, the CGA said. Due to the provocation, the CGA initiated an operation to increase

The boy died four months after being placed in full-time foster care with the

The Chinese military has boosted its capability to fight at a high tempo using the element of surprise and new technology, the Ministry of National Defense said in the Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR) published on Monday last week. The ministry highlighted Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) developments showing significant changes in Beijing’s strategy for war on Taiwan. The PLA has made significant headway in building capabilities for all-weather, multi-domain intelligence, surveillance, operational control and a joint air-sea blockade against Taiwan’s lines of communication, it said. The PLA has also improved its capabilities in direct amphibious assault operations aimed at seizing strategically important beaches,
