Five police officers involved in a false accusation of shoplifting have been formally disciplined, Taichung Police Commissioner Lee Wen-chang (李文章) said today.
The five people, all from the Sixth Police Precinct, brought a woman surnamed Wei (魏) and her two daughters to a police station on Saturday after store security accused them of stealing goods at Eslite 480.
It was later discovered that none of them had shoplifted, leading to Wei write a 2,000-word letter to Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen (盧秀燕) decrying the family’s unfair treatment.

Lu and Eslite Spectrum Corp formally apologized to the family on Monday.
The lead on-duty officer has received two warnings, the two subordinate officers have received one warning each and the trainees would not be formally punished, Lee said.
The officer who was responsible for processing the case, but failed to file a formal report also received two warnings, Lee added.
The officers failed to ascertain all the facts regarding the case in contravention of regulations on handling criminal matters, Lee said.
The police station's director and deputy director would be further investigated to determine what role they played in the matter, he added.
To prevent similar incidents from happening again, all police precincts in Taichung would be required to review and learn from this case to ensure future situations are handled appropriately, Lee said.
