As China’s verbal and military intimidation continues, strengthening Taiwan’s security would strengthen the world’s security, President Willliam Lai (賴清德) said yesterday.
Lai made the remark when meeting with a visiting US delegation of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) led by the nonprofit’s commander-in-chief, Alfred Lipphardt, at the Presidential Office.
The VFW has passed a resolution in support of Taiwan, Lai said, thanking them for their years of support and mutual friendship.

Lai added that he was thankful to the US government for helping Taiwan strengthen its self-defense capabilities, establishing strong economic ties and supporting Taiwan’s international participation.
Taiwan would continue to work with like-minded countries to defend freedom, and maintain stability and prosperity in the region, he said.
The relationship between the Veterans Affairs Council (VAC) and the VFW dates back to the 1980s, Lipphardt said.
At the 124th VFW National Convention in 2023, then-VAC vice minister Wu Chih-yang (吳志揚) and then-VFW commander-in-chief Timothy Borland issued a joint declaration affirming the relationship between the two organizations, Lipphardt said.
Former president Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) also delivered a prerecorded speech at the event’s opening ceremony, he added.
This year’s VFW National Convention would take place in August, Lipphardt said, adding that he hopes Lai can also deliver prerecorded remarks for the event.
Lipphardt also expressed his hopes that the VAC can participate in the organization’s upcoming Department of Pacific Areas Convention in Bangkok that is to run from June 18 to June 21.
Taiwan is stepping up plans to create self-sufficient supply chains for combat drones and increase foreign orders from the US to counter China’s numerical superiority, a defense official said on Saturday. Commenting on condition of anonymity, the official said the nation’s armed forces are in agreement with US Admiral Samuel Paparo’s assessment that Taiwan’s military must be prepared to turn the nation’s waters into a “hellscape” for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Paparo, the commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, reiterated the concept during a Congressional hearing in Washington on Wednesday. He first coined the term in a security conference last
