Four lifestyle habits that could contribute to hair loss are an unbalanced diet, unmanaged seborrheic dermatitis, smoking and drinking alcohol, and staying up late, a dermatologist said.
Kei Po-huan (柯博桓), a dermatologist who specializes in hair transplants in Taichung and Taipei to treat hair loss and male pattern baldness, said in a recent post on his Facebook page that besides genetics, the immune system and hair growth cycles, hair loss and even baldness could often be caused by these four unhealthy lifestyle habits.
First, an unbalanced diet and insufficient nutrient intake, particularly a lack of protein, iron, zinc and vitamins, could affect hair follicle health, making hair weak and prone to breakage, he added.

Consuming foods that are too oily or with a high salt or sugar content could trigger excessive sebum production, clogging hair follicles and affecting hair growth, he said.
A healthy diet that is well-balanced and contains fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and complete proteins is key to healthy hair growth, he said.
Second, unmanaged seborrheic dermatitis, an incurable skin condition causing a scaly, inflamed scalp, might damage hair follicles and even worsen the onset of male pattern baldness, he said.
Seborrheic dermatitis could be managed with medicated shampoos and topical medications, he added.
Third, Kei recommends reducing or stopping smoking and drinking alcohol, as nicotine restricts blood circulation to the scalp, starving hair follicles of the necessary oxygen and nutrients for healthy hair growth, while alcohol could also disrupt nutrient metabolism.
Finally, Kei warns against late nights and lack of sleep, which could cause a hormone imbalance and decrease the growth hormones needed for hair follicle repair and new hair growth, recommending seven to eight hours of quality sleep per night.
