A temperature of 8.9°C was recorded in New Taipei City's Shiding District (石碇) early this morning, as a continental cold air mass blanketed northern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
It was the lowest temperature recorded in Taiwan proper this morning, followed by 10.2°C in Hsinchu County's Guansi Township (關西), and 10.7°C in Miaoli County's Gongguan Township (公館), CWA data showed.

The weather was expected to remain cool and dry for the rest of the day, the CWA said, but it warned of steep temperature drops at night, particularly in central and southern parts of the country.
Daytime temperatures of about 19°C to 20°C were forecast for northern areas, as well as for Yilan and Hualien counties in the east, while highs of between 22°C and 24°C were expected in other regions, the agency said.
With the sharp drop at night, lows of 13°C to 14°C could be expected in the northern half of Taiwan, and 15°C to 17°C in other areas, the CWA said.
In Taiwan's outlying islands, daytime temperatures are to range between 15°C and 18°C in Penghu County, 11°C and 18°C in Kinmen County, and 10°C and 13°C in Lienchiang County, the agency said.
Meanwhile, sunny to cloudy skies are to prevail across Taiwan today, with chances of sporadic rain in the eastern half of the country, the CWA said.
According to independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮), atmospheric moisture is to gradually increase today through Wednesday, raising the chances of sporadic rain, not only in the east, but also in the greater Taipei area.
Citing the latest European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts model, Wu also said the current cold air mass is to continue to affect Taiwan until Wednesday morning.
It is to weaken Wednesday and Thursday, before another front arrives on Friday, bringing cold and wet weather to Taiwan, he said.
Those conditions would prevail until Monday next week, with the lowest temperatures expected on Sunday night, Wu said.
An alleged US government plan to encourage Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to form a joint venture with Intel to boost US chipmaking would place the Taiwanese foundry giant in a more disadvantageous position than proposed tariffs on imported chips, a semiconductor expert said yesterday. If TSMC forms a joint venture with its US rival, it faces the risk of technology outflow, said Liu Pei-chen (劉佩真), a researcher at the Taiwan Industry Economics Database of the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research. A report by international financial services firm Baird said that Asia semiconductor supply chain talks suggest that the US government would

LITTORAL REGIMENTS: The US Marine Corps is transitioning to an ‘island hopping’ strategy to counterattack Beijing’s area denial strategy The US Marine Corps (USMC) has introduced new anti-drone systems to bolster air defense in the Pacific island chain amid growing Chinese military influence in the region, The Telegraph reported on Sunday. The new Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) Mk 1 is being developed to counter “the growing menace of unmanned aerial systems,” it cited the Marine Corps as saying. China has constructed a powerful defense mechanism in the Pacific Ocean west of the first island chain by deploying weapons such as rockets, submarines and anti-ship missiles — which is part of its anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) strategy against adversaries — the
