Although this week saw a small rise in temperatures, starting tomorrow, the cold wave is expected to last through the weekend and be at its coldest on Saturday and Sunday, Lin said.
Compared to prior cold fronts, this one is expected to be stronger and longer lasting, he added.
Northern Taiwan is expected to see low temperatures of 7°C to 10°C, central Taiwan 8°C to 12°C, southern Taiwan 10°C to 15°C, Penghu County 11°C to 14°C and Kinmen County 6°C to 8°C, Lin said.
Although today saw temperatures rise and the cold front weaken, the latest weather models show that Saturday through Monday could see temperatures drop to 5°C, even in low-lying areas, independent meteorologist Daniel Wu (吳德榮) said.
At altitudes above 3,000m in central Taiwan, there is a chance of some snowfall, Wu said.
Tomorrow and Saturday could see intermittent rainfall in northern and eastern Taiwan, but on Sunday and Monday, there might be sunny weather in the western part of the country, Wu said.
Eastern Taiwan may still experience some rainfall, he added.
From Monday to Wednesday next week, the weather should stabilize and temperatures rise, Wu said.
Another cold front is expected next Thursday, but is not expected to be as strong as the one tomorrow, he added.
