Air quality across the west coast and on outlying islands is to be unhealthy for sensitive groups today, especially in the central and far southern regions, Ministry of Environment data showed.
A “red” warning was in effect for Taichung, Kaohsiung, Changhua County, Nantou County and Pingtung County, meaning that air quality is unhealthy for the general public, according to the ministry’s Taiwan Air Quality Monitoring Network.
Tainan, Hsinchu city and county, Chiayi city and county, and Yunlin County, as well as the outlying Kinmen, Lienchiang and Penghu counties, were under an “orange” warning, meaning that air quality is unhealthy for sensitive groups.

A circulating high-pressure system combined with easterly winds have created poor diffusion conditions in the western half of the country, the ministry said.
Going into the evening, low cloud cover and localized fog is to affect visibility in these regions, it added.
Other areas in the north and east were under a “yellow” advisory, indicating moderate air quality.

The Shanlan Express (山嵐號), or “Mountain Mist Express,” is scheduled to launch on April 19 as part of the centennial celebration of the inauguration of the Taitung Line.
