The lowest temperature in a non-mountainous area in Taiwan this winter was recorded in Miaoli County this morning, when the mercury dropped to 1°C, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
The record low temperature, brought by a strong continental cold air mass coupled with radiative cooling effects, was recorded at 7:20am in Sanwan Township (三灣), the CWA said.

In the adjoining Hsinchu County, a temperature of 2.1°C was recorded in Emei Township (峨眉), the second-lowest in a non-mountainous area in the country, the CWA said.
Across the rest of Taiwan, temperatures ranged between 4°C and 8°C in the early hours today, CWA data showed.
The mercury was forecast to rise gradually nationwide during the day, with highs of 18°C to 21°C expected in northern and eastern Taiwan, as well as in Penghu and Kinmen counties, 22°C to 23°C in central and southern Taiwan and 14°C in Lienchiang County, the agency said.
The CWA warned that despite the warmer daytime highs, sharp fluctuations of 10°C to 15°C were likely at night, particularly in the western part of the country.

Taiwan plans to cull as many as 120,000 invasive green iguanas this year to curb the species’ impact on local farmers, the Ministry of Agriculture said.
