Strengthening northeasterly winds are expected to bring temperatures in northern Taiwan down to as low as 20°C today, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
The seasonal winds are expected to also deliver moisture, resulting in wet and cool weather in parts of northern, northeastern and eastern Taiwan, with temperatures in those areas to range between 20°C and 26°C throughout the day, the CWA forecast.

The CWA said rainfall would be most evident in Yilan and Hualien counties, while heavy rain was possible in Keelung, along Taiwan's northeastern coast and in mountainous regions in the greater Taipei area.
Central and southern Taiwan could also be affected by the seasonal winds, but to a lesser degree, the CWA said, forecasting partly sunny skies and daytime highs of between 28°C and 30°C.
Sporadic showers are likely in mountainous areas of central and southern Taiwan in the afternoon, and temperatures are to fall to 22°C to 23°C at night, the agency said.
The CWA has also issued a strong wind advisory for Taoyuan, Hsinchu City, Hsinchu County and Miaoli County in the north, Taichung and Changhua County in central Taiwan, and Yunlin County, the Hengchun Peninsula and Orchid (Lanyu, 蘭嶼) and Green (綠島) islands in the south.
The advisory also applies to Penghu, Kinmen and Lienchiang counties.
Independent meteorologist Wu Der-rong (吳德榮) said there would be less moisture in the seasonal winds tomorrow and Thursday, meaning that the weather is likely to turn stable with only brief showers possible.
Given the possible effects of Typhoon Yinxing, moisture in the air is expected to increase from Friday through Nov. 11.
Yinxing strengthened to a typhoon early today, and is expected to move into the Bashi Channel that separates Taiwan and the Philippines, the CWA said.
As of 8am, Yinxing was about 970km southeast of Oluanpi (鵝鑾鼻), Taiwan's southernmost point, and was moving northwest at 26kph.
The storm, which is currently packing maximum sustained winds of 119kph and gusts of up to 155kph, is expected to be about 700km southeast of Oluanpi by early tomorrow.
According to current CWA forecasts, Yinxing is to pass through the southern part of the Bashi Channel near northern Luzon in the Philippines over the weekend, but would not directly impact Taiwan.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment said the air quality in Taiwan would be mostly "fair" or "good" today.
An "orange" air quality alert has been issued for some parts of southern Taiwan and the Lienchiang County, suggesting unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups such as the elderly, children and people with cardiac or respiratory conditions.
Theaters and institutions in Taiwan have received 28 threatening e-mails, including bomb threats, since a documentary critical of China began being screened across the nation last month, the National Security Bureau said yesterday. The actions are part of China’s attempts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty, it said. State Organs (國有器官) documents allegations that Chinese government officials engage in organ harvesting and other illegal activities. From last month to Friday last week, 28 incidents have been reported of theaters or institutions receiving threats, including bomb and shooting threats, if they did not stop showing the documentary, the bureau said. Although the threats were not carried out,
‘GRAY ZONE’ TACTICS: China continues to build up its military capacity while regularly deploying jets and warships around Taiwan, with the latest balloon spotted on Sunday The US is drawing up contingency plans for military deployments in Japan and the Philippines in case of a Taiwan emergency, Japan’s Kyodo news agency reported. They would be incorporated in a first joint operation plan to be formulated in December, Kyodo reported late on Sunday, citing sources familiar with Japan-US relations. A US Marine Corps regiment that possesses High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems — a light multiple rocket launcher — would be deployed along the Nansei Island chain stretching from Kyushu to Yonaguni near Taiwan, Kyodo said. According to US military guidelines for dispatching marines in small formations to several locations,
As Taiwan celebrated its baseball team’s victory in the World Baseball Softball Confederation’s Premier12 on Sunday, how politicians referred to the team in their congratulatory messages reflected the nation’s political divide. Taiwan, competing under the name Chinese Taipei (中華台北隊), made history with its first-ever Premier12 championship after beating Japan 4-0 at the Tokyo Dome. Right after the game, President William Lai (賴清德) congratulated the team via a post on his Facebook page. Besides the players, Lai also lauded the team’s coaching and medical staff, and the fans cheering for them in Tokyo or watching the live broadcast, saying that “every
The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) yesterday confirmed that Chinese students visiting Taiwan at the invitation of the Ma Ying-jeou Foundation were almost all affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). During yesterday’s meeting convened by the legislature’s Foreign Affairs and National Defense Committee, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Michelle Lin (林楚茵) asked whether the visit was a way to spread China’s so-called “united front” rhetoric, to which MAC Deputy Ministry Shen You-chung (沈有忠) responded with the CCP comment. The MAC noticed that the Chinese individuals visiting Taiwan, including those in sports, education, or religion, have had increasingly impressive backgrounds, demonstrating that the
