The Terry Fox Run, a charity event to raise funds for cancer research, is scheduled for Saturday at Breeze Park (微風運河) in New Taipei City’s Lujhou District (蘆洲).
Known as “Run for Courage 2024” this year, people can jog, walk or wheelchair in the 3.5km, 7km or 10km category, organizers told a news conference in Taipei last week.
Organizers are targeting 800 entries this year, with proceeds to be donated to the Formosa Cancer Foundation and the Canada-based Terry Fox Foundation.

Last year’s event drew 600 participants and raised more than NT$500,000.
“The Terry Fox Run is more than just a race, it is a global movement that has united communities worldwide for over four decades in the fight against cancer,” said Grant Sundal, principal of TCS Experimental Education, the event’s main organizer.
The event is cohosted by the Taipei Department of Education, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan and the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, while sponsors include BeeTouched, BeenJau Corp, Showtime, Beaute J’adore, CloudMile, Inter Fuzi, Air Space, Queen Shop, Roots and Louisa Coffee.
The event on Saturday is to commemorate the legacy of Terry Fox, a Canadian who lost a leg to bone cancer and started a “Marathon of Hope” across Canada in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research.
Fox completed 5,400km of the 8,000km planned distance before a recurrence of the cancer forced him to stop in northern Ontario.
He passed away the following year aged 22.
The Terry Fox Run has been held each year in Canada and elsewhere since Fox died, raising US$850 million worldwide for cancer research.
People can sign up to run at Breeze Park on Saturday between 7:30am and 8:30am.
Each entrant would receive an event T-shirt, a towel, a picnic mat, a reusable shopping bag and a raffle ticket for a prize draw.
Details of the courses and other activities are available online at www.ctrun.com.tw/Activity?EventMain_ID=157.

China’s military buildup in the southern portion of the first island chain poses a serious threat to Taiwan’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply, a defense analyst warned. Writing in a bulletin on the National Defense and Security Research’s Web site on Thursday, Huang Tsung-ting (黃宗鼎) said that China might choke off Taiwan’s energy supply without it. Beginning last year, China entrenched its position in the southern region of the first island chain, often with Russia’s active support, he said. In May of the same year, a Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) force consisting of a Type 054A destroyer, Type 055 destroyer,
Actor Darren Wang (王大陸) was questioned by prosecutors for allegedly orchestrating an attack on a taxi driver after he was allegedly driven on a longer than necessary route in a car he disliked. The questioning at the New Taipei City District Prosecutors’ Office was ongoing as of press time last night. Police have recommended charges of attempted murder. The legally embattled actor — known for his role in the coming-of-age film Our Times (我的少女時代) — is under a separate investigation for allegedly using fake medical documents to evade mandatory military service. According to local media reports, police said Wang earlier last year ordered a
Taiwan is planning to expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI)-based X-ray imaging to customs clearance points over the next four years to curb the smuggling of contraband, a Customs Administration official said. The official on condition of anonymity said the plan would cover meat products, e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, large bundles of banknotes and certain agricultural produce. Taiwan began using AI image recognition systems in July 2021. This year, generative AI — a subset of AI which uses generative models to produce data — would be used to train AI models to produce realistic X-ray images of contraband, the official
