The Keelung District Court has sentenced a man named Chen Chih-hung (陳志鴻) to 11 years in prison for stabbing a Malaysian college student to death last year.
The vcitim, 23, surnamed Chen (陳), was a student of the National Taiwan Ocean University’s Department of Marine Environmental Informatics.

After drinks, two of Chen Chih-hung’s friends, surnamed Chang (張) and Hsu (許), accidentally smashed the door into the private room of the victim and his coworkers.
Chang and Hsu apologized and no conflict occurred, they said.
At about 4am the next day, the victim was walking with his friend, surnamed Yan (顏), when they saw Chen Chih-hung and his friend, surnamed Lin (林), at a traffic light.
The parties quarreled over the earlier incident, during which Chen Chih-hung pulled out a pocket knife and stabbed the victim on his right thigh and Yan on his left thigh, they said.
The victim was stabbed across his right femoral artery and caused serious hemorrhage and hypovolemic shock, and eventually died from multiple organ failure after three days of emergency treatment.
Chen Chih-hung has since been arrested and detained by the Keelung District Prosecutors’ Office, and was prosecuted for causing bodily harm resulting in death in March.
During the trial, the victim’s older sister said that their father passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, and their mother was deeply saddened by the successive loss of her husband and son.
Their parents had high expectations for their son, who was the only child that was sent to study abroad, she said, adding that her brother was so diligent that he worked and studied simultaneously.
He should have had a promising life ahead of him, and the defendant should pay the price with his life in jail, she said.
Prosecutor Liu Hsing-ju (劉星汝) said Chen Chih-hung is ruthless, impulsive, highly aggressive and dangerous, with a criminal record of causing bodily harm.
As Chen Chih-hung did not learn from his past crimes, Liu recommended a 10 to 12-year sentence.
Chen Chih-hung is to be punished with 11 years in prison for causing bodily harm resulting in death, the judicial panel said.
