The Miaoli District Court has granted a woman’s petition for a divorce after being presented with evidence of domestic violence that included being splashed with hot milk, urine and being forced to take cold showers.
In the ruling handed out earlier this week, the court said that the woman, whose name was withheld to protect her privacy, had been married since 1998, and had two children who are now adults.
After getting married, the woman suffered years of abuse, as her husband was overly possessive and forbade her from owning a mobile phone to prevent her from communicating with other people, and was physically violent at home, the ruling said

The woman gave a statement that he had threatened her with a knife, saying: “I will kill you one of these days.”
Earlier this year, he beat her with a wooden broom handle, injuring her fingers and wrists, as well as leaving bruises on her right thigh. She ran to her friend’s house to seek help, the ruling said.
She took a medical exam to record her injuries, then filed a police complaint alleging assault resulting in injury. She obtained a protective order against her husband and moved to live in the home of a relative.
In her statement, she said that since her two children are grown up, she wanted to file for a court-ordered divorce.
During the trial, the husband accused the wife of making up most of the incidents, but admitted to threatening to kill her, which he said was during an emotional outburst and that he did not mean it.
The husband also demanded that if her petition for divorce was granted, she must return the NT$22 million (US$669,956) that she allegedly received from him during their marriage.
During the trial, the couple’s children testified that they had witnessed their father commit violence against their mother, including beating her with wooden rods and plastic bottles, smearing lard on her bed, pouring hot milk on her head and even once slamming a door on her hand.
Both said they support their mother’s divorce petition, but that their father’s demand for repayment was unreasonable.
The court approved the divorce, stating that the wife had suffered intolerable physical and mental abuse for many years.
Moreover, the man’s demand that she “return the money” shows that he is unift to be a husband, the judge said.
