A US Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft transited the Taiwan Strait on Wednesday afternoon, the Ministry of National Defense said, nearly two months after a similar transit on Oct. 12.
The military monitored the maritime patrol aircraft as it flew southward along the median line of the Strait, and the situation remains normal, the ministry said.
The US Navy 7th Fleet announced the transit earlier in a news release, saying it demonstrates the US’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

“By operating within the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law, the United States upholds the navigational rights and freedoms of all nations,” it said.
When a P-8A Poseidon last transited the Strait on Oct. 12, the Chinese People’s Liberation Army dispatched a fleet of jets to monitor and warn the plane.
Before that, the US last announced a Poseidon mission through the Strait in July.
The P-8A Poseidon is a multi-mission maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft capable of anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare.
