The Tainan International Music Festival, which is to run from Saturday to October, will feature 11 performances by 10 groups of musicians from Taiwan and the West.
Eight of the 11 performances are to be held at the Tainan Cultural Center Performance Hall, including German violinist David Garrett performing a selection of classic 19th and 20th-century musical works with a guitar and bass player, while Gautier Capudon is to play Antonin Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in b minor Op.104, the Tainan City Government said.
The three other venues are the Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park, Taiwan Poetry Road, and the Tainan Shanshang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum.

Taiwanese violinist Tseng Yu-chien (曾宇謙), who won second prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 2015, is to perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major Op. 35 at the Tainan Cultural Center, the city government said.
In addition to classical music, Evergreen Symphony Orchestra is to play songs and melodies from Disney animations such as Peter Pan, Moana, Aladdin, Frozen and The Lion King at the cultural center, it added. The orchestra will also combine musical performances with scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone on the screen at the cultural center, the city government said.
In addition, French baritone Marc Mauillon, known for his distinctive vocal timbre, is to be accompanied by his sister and harpist Angelique in presenting a collection of early Baroque music Li Due Orfei from Italy and France at the cultural center, it said.
At the same venue, the Tainan City Traditional Orchestra, in collaboration with pianist Yen Chun-chieh (嚴俊傑) and liuqin player Rainie Lin (林宸妡), is to perform contemporary Chinese music, combining traditional Chinese music with modern elements, it added.
At the end of next month, three jazz bands are to present Latin jazz and New Orleans jazz at Hatta Yoichi Memorial Park during a lantern festival, while there will be a Japanese-style fair nearby, it said.
Mugo Music Record Tales Cultural Studio and Cosmos Chamber Orchestra are to perform together popular music Taiwanese songs with local poetry at Taiwan Poetry Road, it said.
Taipei Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, which is committed to bringing art and music to the public, is to perform for parents and children at the Tainan Shanshang Garden and Old Waterworks Museum, while program hosts, magicians and other acts entertain as the music plays, it added.
Foreign tourists who purchase a seven-day Taiwan Pass are to get a second one free of charge as part of a government bid to boost tourism, the Tourism Administration said yesterday. A pair of Taiwan Passes is priced at NT$5,000 (US$156.44), an agency staff member said, adding that the passes can be used separately. Drinking a lot of water or milk would not help a person who has ingested terbufos, a toxic chemical that has been identified as the likely cause of three deaths, a health expert said yesterday. An 83-year-old woman surnamed Tseng (曾) and two others died this week after eating millet dumplings with snails that Tseng had made. BIG collection: The herbarium holds more than 560,000 specimens, from the Japanese colonial period to the present, including the Wulai azalea, which is now extinct in the wild The largest collection of plant specimens in Taiwan, the Taipei Botanical Garden’s herbarium, is celebrating its 100th anniversary with an exhibition that opened on Friday. The herbarium provides critical historical documents for botanists and is the first of its kind in Taiwan, Taiwan Forestry Research Institute director Tseng Yen-hsueh (曾彥學) said. It is housed in a two-story red brick building, which opened during 1924.
