Taiwan has confirmed its first locally acquired typhoid fever case this year, a man who recently traveled to one of the nation’s outlying islands, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said in a statement on Wednesday.
The man, who is in his 30s, lives in northern Taiwan, the CDC said.
He tested positive for the disease on Monday after developing symptoms, including a fever, headache and diarrhea on July 11, it said.

He was treated for the symptoms, but his condition worsened on Aug. 12 and he was hospitalized seven days later, it said.
Although it remains unclear where the man contracted the disease, it was likely in late June during a family trip to an outlying island, where he consumed raw seafood, the CDC said.
None of his eight travel companions have had symptoms so far, the CDC said, adding that tests are ongoing.
As of Wednesday, Taiwan had reported six typhoid cases this year, five of which were imported, mostly from Indonesia, the CDC said.
The number of domestic cases to date in the period since 2019 was four, two, one and one, CDC data showed.
The number of imported cases in the period since 2019 was 13, three, none and one, the data showed.
Typhoid is a bacterial infection that enters the body through the gastrointestinal tract, with symptoms usually beginning eight to 14 days following exposure, manifesting in constant fever, diarrhea, headaches, abdominal pain and coughing, the CDC said.
People should refrain from eating uncooked food or drinking untreated water in areas where typhoid is endemic, it said.
People should wash their hands thoroughly before eating and consider getting vaccinated against typhoid if they plan to travel frequently to such areas, it added.

Commenting on condition of anonymity, the official said the nation’s armed forces are in agreement with US Admiral Samuel Paparo’s assessment that Taiwan’s military must be prepared to turn the nation’s waters into a “hellscape” for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). Paparo, the commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, reiterated the concept during a Congressional hearing in Washington on Wednesday. He first coined the term in a security conference last
