People younger than 40 who experience sudden loss of vision and worsening of their astigmatism could have keratoconus, an eye disease that affects the structure of the cornea, and they should seek medical treatment as soon as possible, a physician said yesterday.
An adolescent student surnamed Wu (吳) said that he did not have nearsightedness nor astigmatism before, but that suddenly changed when he turned 10.
When Wu was in fourth grade, his vision started to get blurry, and he was found to have severe astigmatism of 4 diopters, he said.
The following year, his visual acuity rapidly degraded from a normal rating of 20/20 to 20/50, and he was diagnosed with keratoconus.
A few years later, when entering junior high school, Wu’s astigmatism significantly worsened — to 9 diopters in his left eye and 10 in his right eye — and his vision also worsened.
It was then that he was referred to Shinkong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital for a corneal collagen crosslinking surgery.
Shinkong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital ophthalmologist Cheng Sheng-fu (鄭聖甫) said that keratoconus is an uncommon corneal disorder, in which the eye’s cornea is unable to hold its round shape, and gradually thins out and bulges like a cone, resulting in blurry or distorted vision.
The cause is unknown, as some cases appear to be genetic, and some seem to be associated with allergies, eczema, excessive eye rubbing or having received surgery for myopia correction, Cheng said.
An estimated several thousand people have keratoconus in Taiwan, and the onset of the condition typically occurs between the ages of 10 and 40, he said, adding that people who develop it early tend to have a more severe form of keratoconus.
Doctors originally recommended that Wu get cornea transplant surgery, but at Shinkong Wu Ho-Su he was able to receive corneal collagen crosslinking surgery, which is a minimally invasive procedure that uses vitamin B eye drops and ultraviolet light to cause a chemical reaction that leads to the formation of bonds among collagen fibers in the cornea to strengthen it, he said.
After obtaining a permit to import the medicine and equipment for the procedure, the hospital began the surgery in 2021.
Wu was the second case in Taiwan to undergo the treatment, Cheng said, adding that so far more than 100 people have received the surgery at the hospital.
People younger than 40 who experience sudden loss of vision, worsening of astigmatism, and increased sensitivity to bright lights and glare, which cannot be solved by getting glasses, should seek an examination to check if their symptoms are a result of keratoconus, and get treatment as early as possible, he said.
A decision to describe a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on Singapore’s Taiwan policy as “erroneous” was made because the city-state has its own “one China policy” and has not followed Beijing’s “one China principle,” Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang (田中光) said yesterday. It has been a longstanding practice for the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to speak on other countries’ behalf concerning Taiwan, Tien said. The latest example was a statement issued by the PRC after a meeting between Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong (黃循財) and Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平) on the sidelines of the APEC summit
Taiwan’s passport ranked 34th in the world, with access to 141 visa-free destinations, according to the latest update to the Henley Passport Index released today. The index put together by Henley & Partners ranks 199 passports globally based on the number of destinations holders can access without a visa out of 227, and is updated monthly. The 141 visa-free destinations for Taiwanese passport holders are a slight decrease from last year, when holders had access to 145 destinations. Botswana and Columbia are among the countries that have recently ended visa-free status for Taiwanese after “bowing to pressure from the Chinese government,” the Ministry
HEALTHCARE: Following a 2022 Constitutional Court ruling, Taiwanese traveling overseas for six months would no longer be able to suspend their insurance Measures allowing people to suspend National Health Insurance (NHI) services if they plan to leave the country for six months would be abolished starting Dec. 23, NHIA Director-General Shih Chung-liang (石崇良) said yesterday. The decision followed the Constitutional Court’s ruling in 2022 that the regulation was unconstitutional and that it would invalidate the regulation automatically unless the NHIA amended it to conform with the Constitution. The agency would amend the regulations to remove the articles and sections that allow the suspension of NHI services, and also introduce provisional clauses for those who suspended their NHI services before Dec. 23, Shih said. Theaters and institutions in Taiwan have received 28 threatening e-mails, including bomb threats, since a documentary critical of China began being screened across the nation last month, the National Security Bureau said yesterday. The actions are part of China’s attempts to undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty, it said. State Organs (國有器官) documents allegations that Chinese government officials engage in organ harvesting and other illegal activities. From last month to Friday last week, 28 incidents have been reported of theaters or institutions receiving threats, including bomb and shooting threats, if they did not stop showing the documentary, the bureau said. Although the threats were not carried out,
