Pingtung Civic Park won the environmental category at the 2023 FIABCI World Prix d'Excellence Awards in Miami on Friday, which is the park’s 18th international award.
Pingtung Civic Park was built on the renovated remains of a 27-year-old abandoned Taisugar pulp mill, and forms part of the Shashe River (殺蛇溪) waterfront, which was once a center of industrial production that has been the focus of government revitalization efforts.

The park’s creative design integrates industrial elements with the surrounding environment, and incorporates benches, paths and water installations, as well as a splash pad and playground equipment for children.
The park has won 18 awards to date including the MUSE Design Award and the Architizer A+Award in the US, the A'Design Award in Italy, the European Landezine International Landscape Award (LILA), the ICONIC AWARDS in Germany, and others.
“Alone, we can go fast. As a group, we can go far,” Pingtung County Commissioner Chou Chun-mi (周春米) said Friday in a press release welcoming receipt of the award.

Eleven people, including actor Darren Wang (王大陸), were taken into custody today for questioning regarding the evasion of compulsory military service and document forgery, the New Taipei District Prosecutors’ Office said. Former Taiwan People’s Party chairman Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) may apply to visit home following the death of his father this morning, the Taipei Detention Center said. Ko’s father, Ko Cheng-fa (柯承發), passed away at 8:40am today at the Hsinchu branch of National Taiwan University Hospital. He was 94 years old.
