Three people in two vehicles, including a mother and her teenage daughter, were killed yesterday morning after being struck by a speeding driver in Yilan County’s Wujie Township (五結), local authorities said.
At about 7am, a 60-year-old man surnamed Wu (吳) driving a black sedan eastward at a high speed along Section 3 of Sibin Road (溪濱路) slammed into the rear left side of a minivan as he approached the intersection with Jhenan Road (鎮安路), the Yilan County Police Bureau said.
The minivan was sent into oncoming traffic, where it struck a small work truck, police said.

The impact of the collision ejected the occupants of the minivan — a 42-year-old woman surnamed Chung (鐘) and her 18-year-old daughter surnamed Chen (陳) — from their vehicle, while the 50-year-old driver of the work truck, surnamed Wen (溫), became trapped inside his vehicle.
Upon arriving on the scene, emergency personnel found Chung had died of her injuries, while Chen and Wen — who had to be removed from his truck with a hydraulic rescue tool — were sent to local hospitals, where they were later pronounced dead.
Wu was intubated at Lotung Poh-Ai Hospital, where a computerized tomography scan showed he had intracranial and abdominal hemorrhaging.

A blood-alcohol test on Wu came back negative, police said.
A preliminary investigation found that he likely caused the crash by failing to pay attention to traffic conditions, police said.
Any legal responsibility for the incident can only be determined following a full investigation by the Yilan County Traffic Accident Investigation Committee, they said.
