Taiwan FamilyMart Co is assisting the family of a store employee whose body was found on Wednesday, and has nullified the franchise agreement with the store owner, who police are investigating over the death, the company said on Friday.
The body of a 30-year-old employee surnamed Ting (丁) was found covered in bruises in Tainan’s Yongkang District (永康), and an autopsy found a bullet wound indicating that Ting was likely murdered, police said.
Witnesses told police that Ting, who worked the late shift at the convenience store, was taken away by several people the day before.
Investigators said that the store owner, Chen Yi-ling (陳羿伶), 28, her boyfriend, Liu Chia-yu (劉佳宥), 28, and acquaintance Tseng Han-jen (曾漢仁) are the prime suspects in Ting’s death.
Yongkang Police Precinct Deputy Chief Chang Yi-chuan (張翊雋) yesterday said the investigation found that Chen had suspected Ting of stealing from the store, and allegedly asked Liu and Tseng, and others, to take Ting to the store warehouse to demand an explanation.
Chen allegedly instructed them to beat Ting with plastic piping and other items, Chang said.
Tseng allegedly accompanied Ting back to his apartment building, where Ting fell from the 13th story, he said.
Taiwan FamilyMart said it invalidated the franchise agreement with Chen, as she is accused of a crime, and the corporation has taken over the store.
“We deplore the violent incident, and are fully cooperating with the investigation to clarify the facts... We are working to contact Ting’s family, and will provide all the needed assistance for funeral arrangements and related matters,” it said in a statement.
Global bodies should stop excluding Taiwan for political reasons, President William Lai (賴清德) told Pope Francis in a letter, adding that he agrees war has no winners. The Vatican is one of only 12 countries to retain formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, and Taipei has watched with concern efforts by Beijing and the Holy See to improve ties. In October, the Vatican and China extended an accord on the appointment of Catholic bishops in China for four years, pointing to a new level of trust between the two parties.
