Hon Hai Precision Industry Co founder Terry Gou (郭台銘) on Tuesday attended a banquet hosted by Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) legislators aimed to underline party unity.
Gou, as well as New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi (侯友宜), are likely contenders to seek the party’s nomination for next year’s presidential election.
KMT Legislator Jessica Chen (陳玉珍), and the 12 other lawmakers who hosted the banquet, said that regardless of who wins the nomination, they would support the party’s decision.

They also urged Hou and Gou to maintain unity.
KMT Legislator Wang Hung-wei (王鴻薇) said she told Gou at the banquet that she had hoped Gou and Hou would both attend the event to highlight party solidarity.
She denied that the banquet was held to back a possible bid by Gou, adding that Gou attended the event to solicit the opinions of KMT legislators.
KMT Legislator Wu Yi-ting (吳怡玎) said Gou had positive interactions with KMT legislators and agreed that the party must stand united.
In a democratic society, a person who wishes to participate in an election before a party decides on an official candidate should reach out and interact with legislators, she said, adding that it was a regular occurrence.
KMT Legislator Lee Te-wei (李德維) said Gou is an important member of the KMT, but had distanced himself from the party since the 2019 presidential primary.
Gou’s willingness to interact with the KMT is beneficial, Lee said, adding that all KMT members, regardless of who they support, only want to see the party win the election.
“We hope the two sides will not work against each other, but rather work together,” Lee said, adding that the KMT should choose a candidate soon.
KMT Legislator Lo Ming-tsai (羅明才) said that while many hoped Hou would represent the party in the election, Gou is also an adequate candidate, adding that the KMT must decide who is to lead the campaign before the team can begin working.
Gou said the legislators reminded him that the party must stand together, regardless of who the nominee is, adding that he took the message to heart.
He said he would tour the country to canvass support from KMT legislators and learn from them.
