The Ministry of Education seeks to ensure equal treatment for all students to instill in them a sense of pride and confidence in their appearance, Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung (潘文忠) said on Thursday.
Pan made the remarks on the occasion of Gender Equality Education Day, which was in 2004 designated by the ministry in memory of Yeh Yung-chih (葉永鋕), who was also known as the Rose Boy.
Yeh, who was subject to bullying at school due to his gender nonconformity, died at the age of 15 in an unresolved case. On the morning of April 20, 2000, Yeh asked his teacher to go to the bathroom before class ended. A few minutes later, his lifeless body was found on the bathroom floor in a pool of blood.

A probe later censured the school for oversight.
Pan visited the school on Tuesday, saying that its restrooms were redesigned in 2021, with signage at the male restroom featuring a rose and at the female restroom featuring a tree.
The symbols should illustrate that regardless of gender, everyone can be as beautiful as a rose and as solid and reliable as a tree, the school said.
Lo Tsan-ying (羅燦煐), a member of the ministry’s Gender Equality Education Committee, said that Taiwanese have become more aware of gender-based discrimination since Yeh’s death.
The nation’s education system has taken big steps forward in terms of gender equality, Lo said, adding that she hopes that the concept would become the norm in Taiwanese society.
Taiwanese schools offer the second-most gender-equal math education in the world, Lo said, citing data compiled by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement.
