The coach of a high-school baseball team in Hsinchu City has been fired for “improperly disciplining” a student after a school investigation confirmed accusations against the teacher, the city’s Department of Education said on Tuesday.
The coach, whose identity was not disclosed, was dismissed after the school held an internal evaluation meeting on Monday, the department said in a statement.
The coach’s license has been revoked and he has been banned from ever working at schools in the city, it added.

The department said that it would also supervise the school’s follow-up handling of the case and offer counseling to the student involved.
The case came to light after several parents complained to the media that a student had been improperly punished by the coach, who allegedly used a cigarette lighter to burn the student’s elbows, waist and the back of his ears, causing physical and mental scars.
The department launched an investigation after receiving a report from the school on Tuesday last week.
A school official said the school would assist the parent in passing on the information collected to prosecutors, who would determine whether the coach should be charged.
Separately, a female coach at a taekwondo training center in Hsinchu City has been fined NT$420,000 based on the Protection of Children and Youth Welfare and Rights Act (兒童及少年福利與權益保障法), after a department investigation found that she had improperly punished five elementary-school children.
The coach’s license has been revoked and she has been banned from teaching in the nation, the department said.
