The New Power Party (NPP) yesterday at a news conference proposed several bills to help defend Taiwan against China, as the party said that its stance is in accord with the general consensus in Taiwan.
“Defending Taiwan against China is in our party’s DNA,” NPP Chairwoman Chen Jiau-hua (陳椒華) said, adding that Taiwan’s democracy is not as stable or secure as many believe, given global tensions.
Taiwan is facing “worrying domestic and foreign risks,” she said, citing a lack of public support for democracy along with Chinese intimidation and infiltration.

The NPP has pledged to defend Taiwan and never surrender by putting forward a comprehensive proposal to achieve those aims, she said.
To counter Chinese infiltration, the party proposed amendments to the Anti-Infiltration Act (反滲透法), the Trade Secrets Act (營業秘密法), the National Security Act (國家安全法), the Political Donations Act (政治獻金法) and the Foundations Act (財團法人法), she said.
To protect Taiwan, the party has also drafted amendments to the Anti-Corruption Act (貪污治罪條例), the Prison Camp Act (外役監條例), the Act on Property Declaration by Public Servants (公職人員財產申報法), the Equalization of Land Rights Act (平均地權條例), the House Tax Act (房屋稅條例) and the Property Rental Market Development and Regulation Act (租賃住宅市場發展及管理條例), she said.
Passing the amendments would help achieve clean politics and housing justice, which can in turn restore confidence in democracy, she said, calling on the two major parties to work with the NPP and others to pass the proposed amendments promptly.
NPP Taoyuan City councilor candidate Chu Che-cheng (朱哲成) said that Taoyuan mayoral candidates Simon Chang (張善政) of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) and Cheng Yun-peng (鄭運鵬) of the Democratic Progressive Party are known to be close to China.
Chang has been a consultant to the China Zhi Gong Party and the Economy Party — both of which are pro-unification — and Cheng said that he came from “Taiwan, China” while doing business in China, Chu said.
The candidates have shown inclinations toward China, and might continue to do so if either are elected mayor, he said.
Chu called on all parties to support the amendments the NPP has proposed to defend against Chinese aggression, otherwise their stances toward China could appear suspicious.
“Only honest public servants can protect the democratic system and take care of people,” NPP Taipei city councilor candidate Lin Hung-tai (林泓泰) said.
NPP Taichung city councilor candidate Tsou Ming-yen (鄒明諺) said that legislation is necessary to protect against the infiltration of pro-China forces.
