Taiwanese consumers appear to be fond of creative products from Japan and Thailand, on which they spend more money than they would on similar Taiwanese products, a study by local shopping Web site Pinkoi showed.
In the first half of the year, the highest average single purchase by Pinkoi members in Taiwan for Japanese designer products was valued at NT$1,800 on average — double the value that they spend on buying Taiwanese products, Pinkoi said.
The average sum of money a Taiwanese spent buying designer products from Thailand during the period was NT$1,300 per purchase, while spending on creative products from other Asian countries was about NT$1,100 per purchase, the Web site said.
The figures point to a growing trend among Taiwanese to spend money on cross-border shopping, said Pinkoi, which was founded in 2011.
However, the country that saw the highest growth in the number of cross-border orders this year was Thailand, followed by China and Japan.
Pinkoi’s study on consumption trends also showed that Taiwanese consumers are inclined to invite friends and family members to jointly place orders to share on shipment fees.
They do not hesitate to place orders for unique products with special national and cultural features, such as handcrafted shoes, bags and accessories from Thailand, it added.
