Tickets for a special Greater Kaohsiung screening of the four-and-a-half-hour Warriors of the Rainbow: Seediq Bale (彩虹戰士:賽德克巴萊) at the Kaohsiung Arena on Sept. 12 went on sale yesterday.
The film about the Wushu Incident — a violent anti-Japanese uprising in Taiwan in 1930 — has been nominated for the Golden Lion award at this year’s Venice Film Festival.
Originally titled Seediq Bale (賽德克巴萊), the epic is scheduled to be released in two parts nationwide next month.
Director Wei Te-sheng (魏德聖) said the idea of showing the film in a large indoor arena came from the many telephone calls he received from fans saying they wanted to see both halves of the movie in one sitting.
Wei then brought the idea of using the arena to Shih Jhe (史哲), the head of Kaohsiung’s Bureau of Cultural Affairs, who agreed to back the venture.
An IMAX screen will be put in the Kaohsiung Arena to convert it into a huge movie theater.
