C.T. Pan grabs sixth in Inzai
Taiwan’s C.T. Pan yesterday shot a four-under-par 66 to finish tied at sixth at the Zozo Championship in Inzai, Japan. Pan’s five birdies in the final round were enough for him to finish with a 13-under 267, seven strokes behind Colombian Nico Echavarria, who claimed his second PGA Tour title at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. Taiwan’s Kevin Yu finished tied at 16th place with a 10-under 270. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Hsu Wei-ling yesterday shot a four-under-par 68 to finish tied for sixth with a 15-under 273 at the LPGA Tour’s Maybank Championship in Kuala Lumpur. Taiwan’s Chien Pei-yun tied for 22nd with a 10-under 278.

Tseng crashes out in Taipei
Taiwan’s Tseng Chun-hsin on Saturday lost 6-3, 6-4 to second seed Taro Daniel of Japan in the men’s singles semi-final at the Taipei OEC Open. Tseng, seeded fourth, on Friday defeated compatriot Hsu Yu-hsiou 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals of the ATP Challenger Tour tournament. Yesterday, Daniel defeated Australia’s Adam Walton 6-4, 7-5 to win the men’s singles final, while Britain’s David Stevenson and Marcus Willis defeated South Korea’s Nam Ji-sung and Britain’s Joshua Paris 6-3, 6-3 in the men’s doubles final.

Ohtani ball could go on tour
The Taiwanese private investment company that last week paid US$4.392 million for the 50th home run ball hit by the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani said it could take the memorabilia on tour. UC Capital on Friday revealed that it had been the winning bidder in the auction of what it called the holy grail for baseball fans. The company said it would be happy to work with groups in Taiwan and Japan to take the ball on tour, adding that it was open to organizing charity events to allow fans to see the piece of baseball history up close. Aside from hoping that the ball would cultivate Taiwan’s baseball development, the company said it also hoped that the ball would help the world see Taiwan. “Shohei Ohtani will become more and more influential to baseball around the world,” it said. “We deeply believe that this decision is profound.”

Australia beat NZ 22-10
Zac Lomax yesterday scored two tries to spur Australia to a 22-10 win over New Zealand, sealing the Kangaroos’ place in the final of the league’s Pacific Championships. New Zealand and Tonga are to play in Auckland on Saturday to decide who joins Australia in the final on Nov. 10. The Kangaroos beat Tonga 18-0 in the opening match of the tournament in Brisbane on Oct. 20.

Ex-TV star falls short in race
Frankie Muniz on Saturday finished 33rd in his first Truck Series race since the Malcolm in the Middle star announced he would become a full-time NASCAR racer next season. Muniz, 38, recently made the jump from part-time racer to a full slate in the No. 33 Ford for Reaume Brothers Racing. He made two starts for Reaume Brothers this season in the Truck Series. Muniz has said he is confident his team could be successful in this series, but Saturday’s race was marred by mechanical issues for his Toyota.
