Naomi Osaka is braced for a “battle” after yesterday setting up a clash with Coco Gauff in the round-of-16 of the China Open, while top seed Aryna Sabalenka also marched on.
Osaka defeated 60th-ranked American Katie Volynets 6-3, 6-2 and next faces Gauff in a showdown of former US Open champions in Beijing.
World No. 2 Sabalenka swatted aside Ashlyn Krueger 6-2, 6-2 for her 14th consecutive victory and plays another American in 24th-ranked Madison Keys.

Looking ahead to the Gauff meeting, four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka said: “She’s very athletic, obviously.”
“For me, my strongest traits are being aggressive and also my serve, so it’s definitely going to be a battle — who wants to take control of the point first? And I think it’s going to be me,” she said.
Former world No. 1 Osaka is playing her first tournament under Patrick Mouratoglou, the Frenchman best known for being the long-time coach of Serena Williams.
The 26-year-old Japanese won four majors from 2018 to 2021 — the US Open and the Australian Open, both twice.
She is also a former winner in Beijing and has said she feels at home on the hard courts of the Chinese capital.
Osaka has struggled for consistency since returning to tennis in January after the birth of her daughter, Shai, and is ranked 73rd in the world.
Her best results after becoming a parent have been two quarter-final appearances.
Last year’s champion in New York, Gauff booked her place in the round-of-16 with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Britain’s Katie Boulter.
The 20-year-old American is seeded fourth.
She and Osaka have played four times previously, each winning twice. Their last meeting was in 2022 in San Jose, California, when Gauff prevailed 6-4, 6-4.
US Open champion Sabalenka was error-prone in winning her opening match in Beijing against Thai qualifier Mananchaya Sawangkaew in straight sets, but the Belarusian was on top form from the start against 68th-ranked Krueger.
The 26-year-old feels she is not quite playing the best tennis of her career, but said: “Control over my emotions, that’s the key.”
“Before it felt like if I’m not going to win this match, something bad is going to happen. I’m going to die,” she said. “Nowadays I’m just working hard, I’m trying to improve myself every day. Every time I’m on the court, I’m trying to give my best. If you give your best, but you didn’t win the match, it’s okay.”
Sabalenka will take some stopping. Fourteen of her 16 titles have come on hard courts and only world No. 1 Iga Swiatek has won more matches on the WTA Tour this season.
The next generation of running talent takes center stage at today’s Berlin Marathon, in the absence of stars including Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge and Ethiopian world record holder Tigist Assefa. With most of the major marathon stars skipping the event in the wake of the Paris Olympics just more than a month ago, the field is wide open in the men’s and women’s races. Since 2015, Kipchoge has won five times in Berlin, Kenenisa Bekele has won twice and Guye Adola once — with all three missing today. Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie and Ethiopian Tadese Takele are among the favourites for the men, while
Taiwan’s Tony Wu yesterday beat Mackenzie McDonald of the US to win the Nonthaburi Challenger IV in Thailand, his first challenger victory since 2022. The 26-year-old world No. 315, who won both his qualifiers to advance to the main draw, has been on a hot streak this month, winning his past nine matches, including two that ensured Taiwan’s victory in their Davis Cup World Group I tie. Wu took just more than two hours to top world No. 172 McDonald 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) to win his second challenger tournament since the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger in 2022. Wu’s Tallahassee win followed two years of
Nick Castellanos, Trea Turner and Kody Clemens homered on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 9-6 and clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs. Castellanos had three hits and scored three times. Bryson Stott also had three hits and Brandon Marsh drove in three runs for the Phillies, who on Monday claimed their first National League East title in 13 years. Coupled with the Milwaukee Brewers’ 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia secured the bye and home-field advantage in the NL Division Series. The Phillies owned the tiebreaker with the Brewers after winning the season series against the
With a quivering finger, England Subbuteo veteran Rudi Peterschinigg conceded the free-kick that sent his country’s World Cup quarter-final into extra-time before smashing his plastic goalkeeper on the floor in frustration. In the genteel southern English town of Tunbridge Wells, 300 elite players have gathered to play the game they love. “I won’t say this is the best weekend I’ve ever had in my life, but it’s certainly in the top two,” said Hughie Best, 58, who flew in from Perth, Australia, to compete and commentate at the event. Tunbridge Wells is the “spiritual home” of Subbuteo, which was invented there in 1946
