Jorge Martin yesterday won a crash-filled Indonesia MotoGP to extend his championship lead, while closest rival Francesco Bagnaia limited the damage by claiming the final podium place.
The win leaves the Pramac Racing rider 21 points ahead of his Italian Ducati rival, who finished third behind Spaniard Pedro Acosta in sweltering conditions at the Mandalika International Street Circuit on Lombok island.
In front of a crowd of 60,000 in motorbike-mad Indonesia, the 26-year-old put his tumble in Saturday’s sprint behind him, canceling out the gains his title rival Bagnaia made after securing victory in that race.

“Thank you Indonesia. I am very happy. This is not just a victory. After what happened last season, after yesterday’s crash, to perform this way was quite difficult,” Martin said, referring to his crash last year that threw away his lead in the championship. “I trust in myself, but I thought I would crash at every corner. There was a lot of pressure from Pedro so I am really happy.”
There was an intense all-Italian battle for the final podium place between Bagnaia, Enea Bastianini, Franco Morbidelli and Marcho Bezzecchi.
Bagnaia, who won at Mandalika last year, nabbed it after his teammate Bastianini crashed with six laps remaining and he overtook Morbidelli.
“A very, very tough race. I struggled a lot at the start. It’s the fifth start in a row that we struggle. We have to improve that area,” Bagnaia told reporters. “As soon as I was back at the front I was able to push, but it was too late.”
However, as riders crossed the finish line, it was announced Acosta was being investigated for a possible low tire pressure infringement.
A potential penalty of 16 seconds for the Red Bull GasGas rider would give Bagnaia second and four more points, limiting Martin’s lead to just 17.
“I don’t think so, but let’s see,” Acosta said when asked if he thought he would be penalized. “The only thing we can do is wait.”
More than half a dozen riders crashed out of the race.
Marc Marquez’s outside title chances potentially went up in smoke after he drove off the track with flames flickering from his bike.
He is 78 points behind Martin, while Bastianini is still third at 75 points behind the title leader.
Aleix Espargaro, Alex Marquez, Jack Miller and Luca Marini all retired after a pileup on the first lap. Fabio Di Giannantonio and Joan Mir also crashed out.
Aprilia’s Miguel Oliveira was ruled out of the race weekend and left a doubt for next week’s Japan MotoGP after fracturing his right wrist in Friday morning’s free practice session.
Ducati have already sealed the Constructors’ World Championship.

The next generation of running talent takes center stage at today’s Berlin Marathon, in the absence of stars including Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge and Ethiopian world record holder Tigist Assefa. With most of the major marathon stars skipping the event in the wake of the Paris Olympics just more than a month ago, the field is wide open in the men’s and women’s races. Since 2015, Kipchoge has won five times in Berlin, Kenenisa Bekele has won twice and Guye Adola once — with all three missing today. Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie and Ethiopian Tadese Takele are among the favourites for the men, while
Nick Castellanos, Trea Turner and Kody Clemens homered on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 9-6 and clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs. Castellanos had three hits and scored three times. Bryson Stott also had three hits and Brandon Marsh drove in three runs for the Phillies, who on Monday claimed their first National League East title in 13 years. Coupled with the Milwaukee Brewers’ 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia secured the bye and home-field advantage in the NL Division Series. The Phillies owned the tiebreaker with the Brewers after winning the season series against the
With a quivering finger, England Subbuteo veteran Rudi Peterschinigg conceded the free-kick that sent his country’s World Cup quarter-final into extra-time before smashing his plastic goalkeeper on the floor in frustration. In the genteel southern English town of Tunbridge Wells, 300 elite players have gathered to play the game they love. “I won’t say this is the best weekend I’ve ever had in my life, but it’s certainly in the top two,” said Hughie Best, 58, who flew in from Perth, Australia, to compete and commentate at the event. Tunbridge Wells is the “spiritual home” of Subbuteo, which was invented there in 1946
Olympic bronze medalist Lee Meng-yuan has become the first Taiwanese athlete to top the International Shooting Sport Federation’s (ISSF) men’s skeet world rankings, while top Taiwanese shooters won golds in each of yesterday’s finals in Taoyuan. Lee’s 6,610 points put him ahead of fellow men’s skeet medalists from the Paris Olympics Americans Vincent Hancock and Conner Prince. Lee on Monday said that he was surprised by the result, although he had expected his ranking to rise after the Games, which was also the first time a Taiwanese athlete had competed in men’s skeet. Despite topping the rankings, Lee said he believed Hancock, who
