Jude Bellingham’s first year at Real Madrid started in unbelievable fashion amid a whirlwind of goals, but the ending could be more incredible still.
With the Spanish La Liga title in the bag, Madrid are aiming for a fifth La Liga and UEFA Champions League double, against the England international’s former team Borussia Dortmund in tomorrow’s final at Wembley Stadium in London.
“It’s such a big game, my first Champions League final, back home in England against my old team — it’s a crazy one, I couldn’t have dreamed it any better,” Bellingham told reporters this week.

The 20-year-old midfielder was on Wednesday voted La Liga’s player of the season.
Bellingham scored 19 league goals and four in Europe on the way to the final.
Arriving at Real Madrid last summer, he revealed his love of former midfield great Zinedine Zidane and even took the Frenchman’s number five shirt in homage.
However, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti had other plans for Bellingham, a classy center midfielder at Dortmund, putting him straight into the space vacated by striker Karim Benzema’s departure.
It paid instant dividends, with 13 goals in his first 13 games, getting him off to a flying start with Madrid’s fans, quick to serenade him with Beatles song Hey Jude.
Bellingham struck twice, including a 91st minute winner, in his first El Clasico to snatch victory over then-champions Barcelona on Catalan soil.
Did he anticipate this kind of impact?
“I came here expecting to win,” Bellingham said. “I came here because I wanted to win, and to expect it, it’s a bit greedy almost, but you have to be confident when you’re playing with so many great players.”
With another late winner in the second El Clasico and three goals in two matches against shock title challengers Girona, Bellingham delivered in key moments.
His goalscoring slowed as Ancelotti tasked him with more defensive responsibility, chastened by a loss against Atletico Madrid — their only defeat in La Liga. In the UEFA Champions League Madrid are unbeaten.
“What you’ve seen from me this year is a lot of different kinds of roles and positions,” Bellingham said.
There were some concerns around his fitness toward the end of the season following an ankle injury, but he said he feels “very close” to 100 percent after resting once Madrid claimed the title.
Bellingham joined Dortmund from Birmingham City aged 17. He was the English side’s youngest ever player and they retired his number 22 shirt in tribute to him.
Initially outshone by teammates Jadon Sancho and Erling Haaland, Bellingham still managed to establish himself as a regular starter in his first season in Germany.
Dortmund manager Edin Terzic praised Bellingham’s maturity, saying he could “hardly believe that he’s only 17.”
Before his final season at Dortmund, Bellingham was included in the captaincy group alongside skipper Marco Reus and Mats Hummels.
He led them out against Cologne in October 2022, aged just 19, becoming the youngest captain in Bundesliga history.
“You have the feeling he’s got three kids at home — he’s going places,” said Dortmund center back Niklas Suele, a Champions League winner with Bayern Munich.
Bellingham established himself as a world-class talent at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, driving England to the quarter-finals.
Bellingham and Dortmund took last year’s title race to the wire, but lost out to Bayern on the final day, with the midfielder named Bundesliga player of the season.
A fortnight later Bellingham joined Real Madrid for 103 million euros (US$111 million).
“He plays very grown-up football, even though he’s so young,” Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi said this week.
“I’m very happy for Jude, he played a great season,” Emre Can said. “But on the pitch we think just about winning for our club.”
Record 14-time champions Madrid are firm favorites though, and if they win, what is next for Bellingham?
“Hopefully the European Championship,” he said. “I just talked about being greedy... I’m focused on the final.”
An “outstanding” 17-year-old Chinese badminton player died of cardiac arrest after collapsing on court during a tournament in Indonesia, officials said yesterday. Zhang Zhijie was playing a match late Sunday against Japan’s Kazuma Kawano at the Badminton Asia Junior Championships in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The score was 11-11 in the first game when Zhang fell to the floor between points. The teenager received treatment at the venue and was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, but passed away later that night after repeated efforts to resuscitate him failed. “Medical conclusions ... indicated that the victim experienced sudden cardiac arrest,” Broto Happy, spokesman for
Taiwan won a back-and-forth match at the Unions Cup in Singapore yesterday, but the hosts claimed the trophy due to a better points differential over the tournament. Singapore’s players celebrated with the cup, despite losing a match in which they seized the lead three times, but ultimately fell to a 19-16 defeat. Their points advantage was due to their strong opening game against the other team in the competition, Thailand, who they beat 30-8 on Saturday last week. Taiwan narrowly lost to Thailand on Tuesday and went into yesterday’s match facing a steep challenge. They responded well, opening the game with sustained pressure
A buzz of excitement crackled through the hushed arena as the rider gripped the reins of her stuffed steed. Welcome to the strangely exacting world of hobby-horsing, the Finnish sport guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Immaculately coiffed equestrians leap athletically over fences just like in horse jumping, going as fast as they can against the clock straddling their stick steeds. Things are more stately in the dressage, with riders trotting their stick horses with intricately decorated stuffed heads before the discerning eyes of the judges. About 260 riders from 22 countries — most women and girls aged 10 to 20 —
Taiwan’s men’s national basketball team is set to upgrade its depth in the paint after signing Brandon Gilbeck of the P.League+’s Formosa Dreamers to a naturalized player’s contract. The 27-year-old big man from the US landed in Taoyuan early on Monday, where he was welcomed by Chinese Taipei Basketball Association deputy secretary-general Chang Cheng-chung. The two signed the deal, which still has to be approved by the Sports Administration and the Ministry of the Interior. Chang said he is confident that “the proceedings would go smoothly.” If approved, Gilbeck would become the third naturalized basketball player in Taiwan, following the New Taipei Kings’ Quincy
