Donyell Malen on Friday scored a first-half brace as Borussia Dortmund eased to a 3-0 home victory over SC Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
Striker Niclas Fuellkrug, celebrating his 31st birthday, laid on both goals for the Netherlands winger, before grabbing one of his own in the dying stages.
The win sends Dortmund four points clear of fifth-placed RB Leipzig, with the Saxons due to play at Augsburg yesterday.

Malen, who was linked with a move away from Dortmund in the winter transfer window, has now scored four goals in his past four games.
“From the start we had the right intensity and scored at the right moments,” Malen told DAZN. “We’ve made some good steps since [the] winter [break].”
Dortmund have taken 13 points from five league games to boost their bid for a UEFA Champions League place.

“I wished for a win for my birthday — and maybe a bit of birthday cake as well,” Fuellkrug told DAZN.
Dortmund coach Edin Terzic could call on the services of several returning first-team players, including Marco Reus, Julian Brandt and Julian Ryerson, along with Englishman Jadon Sancho, who started on the bench.
In the 16th minute, Malen was teed up by Fuellkrug, who held up the ball with his back to goal and found the Dutchman, who spun on the spot before unleashing a rocket into the roof of the net.
Fuellkrug was again the provider for Dortmund’s second, holding up the ball on the counterattack before passing to Malen, who blasted across the face of goal and in.
The goal came deep into first-half stoppage-time.
The match was delayed by 12 minutes due to fans throwing tennis balls onto the pitch as part of ongoing league-wide protests against foreign investment in German soccer.
“I can understand the fans, it’s their stage and they want to use it to make themselves heard, but from a sporting perspective it’s not so great when you’re frequently interrupted and have to keep warm — it’s not like it’s 25 degrees at the moment,” Fuellkrug said.
Fuellkrug scored a goal of his own late in the game, heading in a cross from Chelsea loanee Ian Maatsen with three minutes remaining.
Brought on with the clock winding down, Sancho — who missed the previous weekend’s draw with Heidenheim with a muscle injury — had two chances to score, but fired his efforts wide.
With nine Bundesliga goals so far this campaign, Malen has already equaled his total from last season.
The loss continued seventh-placed Freiburg’s poor record in Dortmund.
They have not won at the Westfalenstadion since 2001, having lost 15 and drawn one of their past 16 games there.
Third-placed VfB Stuttgart can restore the gap to Dortmund to three points with a win over struggling FSV Mainz 05 today.
Tallon Griekspoor on Friday stunned top seed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4) in the second round at Indian Wells, avenging a devastating loss to the German at Roland Garros last year. Zverev, the world No. 2 who is heading the field of the prestigious ATP Masters event with No. 1 Jannik Sinner serving a three-month drugs ban, is the first Indian Wells men’s top seed to lose his opening match since Andy Murray in 2017. It was a cherished win for Griekspoor, who had lost five straight matches — including four last year — to the German. That included a five-setter
Five-time champion Novak Djokovic on Saturday tumbled out of the Indian Wells ATP Masters, falling in his first match to lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp as two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced. “No excuses for a poor performance,” 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic said after 37 unforced errors in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 defeat. “It doesn’t feel great when you play this way on the court,” he said. “But congratulations to my opponent — just a bad day in the office, I guess, for me.” Djokovic is just the latest in Van de Zandschulp’s string of superstar victims. Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday held their nerve to beat Liverpool 4-1 on penalties and reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after their tie finished one-apiece on aggregate, while Bayern Munich saw off Bayer 04 Leverkusen to complete a 5-0 win over both legs. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha fired Barcelona into the next round as the Catalans bested SL Benfica 3-1, and Inter booked a last-eight meeting with Bayern by seeing off Feyenoord 2-1. At Anfield, Ousmane Dembele netted the only goal of the night as PSG bounced back from Liverpool’s late winner last week to force the tie to extra-time and penalties. Maligned
Taiwan’s Lin Chun-yi on Wednesday inflicted a first-round defeat on former badminton world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen at the All England Open. Lin came out of top after a back-and-forth first game before Axelsen dominated the second, but the Dane was not able to keep that form in the decider as Lin reeled off six points in a row on the way to a 21-19, 13-21, 21-11 victory. “If I don’t play my best, everyone can win against me,” said Axelsen, the world No. 4. “Today’s opponent played a fantastic game; it was disappointing, but that is how it is.” “I just tried
