Just five days after winning in Las Vegas, Max Verstappen today is to climb into his Red Bull car for the final time this year when he begins his bid for another record-extending triumph at the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Like the rest of a weary Formula One circus, the three-time world champion will be fatigued and probably struggling with jet lag following a 12-hour time difference switch after four consecutive races in the Americas.

It brought him level with four-time champion Sebastian Vettel in the record books, and only Michael Schumacher on 91 wins and Lewis Hamilton on 103 lie ahead.
With teammate Sergio Perez finishing third, behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, the outcome in Nevada confirmed Red Bull’s first one-two finish in the drivers’ championship ahead of Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, the team having won the constructors’ title by more than 400 points to claim a memorable double.

The fact that no other team has yet claimed 400 points — compared to Red Bull’s 822 — expresses clearly the advantage they have built this year.
As a result, most attention at the Yas Marina circuit will be on the scraps among the also-rans, with Mercedes defending second place in the teams’ title race on 392 points against Ferrari on 388, with McLaren in a similar fight with Aston Martin for fourth.
For the teams, the finishing positions are worth millions in prize money, while in the drivers’ contest, it is all about personal ambition and pride with Formula One’s two Spanish drivers, Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, and compatriot and two-time champion Fernando Alonso of Aston Martin, locked together on 200 points.
Sainz has the decisive advantage of one race win this season, but both could be vulnerable to the efforts of McLaren’s Lando Norris, sixth on 195, and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, seventh on 188, if they fail to perform or finish.
For Mercedes team chief Toto Wolff, it is a critical race weekend.
“Ferrari have closed the gap in the constructors’ to just four points and we’re ready to give it our all in Abu Dhabi to come out on top,” Wolff said, adding that his team’s inconsistency and bad luck with incidents undid them in Las Vegas.
“They have shown good form recently, but we know we haven’t maximized our performance in the past few races,” he said. “It will be a close fight and hopefully we can finish the season with a strong performance and on the front foot.”
Manchester City have reached do-or-die territory in the UEFA Champions League earlier than expected ahead of what Pep Guardiola has described as a “final” against Club Brugge today. City have disproved the suggestion a new format to Europe’s top club competition would remove any jeopardy for the top clubs as Guardiola stares down the barrel of failing to make the Champions League knockout stages for the first time in his career. The English champions have endured a torrid season both in their English Premier League title defense and on the continent. A run of one win in 13 games, which included Champions League
Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Sunday poured in 35 points as the Thunder grabbed a bounce-back 118-108 victory in Portland to push their NBA-best record to 37-8. The Thunder, surprised by the short-handed Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, fended off a late surge from the Trail Blazers to snap their four-game winning streak. Jalen Williams scored 24 points and Isaiah Joe added 16 off the bench. Center Isaiah Hartenstein, back after a five-game absence with a calf injury, added 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and a big block. The Western Conference leaders were under pressure late as Portland, trailing by 15 heading
The Golden State Warriors on Wednesday withstood Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 52-point outburst to beat the Western Conference leading Thunder 116-109. Andrew Wiggins scored 27 points and Warriors superstar Stephen Curry scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half as Golden State erased a double-digit deficit and pulled away late for the victory. “We just stayed solid,” said Curry, who entered the contest mired in a shooting slump and had just four points on one basket in the first half. “Just all-around effort.” The Thunder, fueled by 31 first-half points from Gilgeous-Alexander, led by as many as 14 in the
Ousmane Dembele on Wednesday scored a hat-trick as Paris Saint-Germain romped to a 4-1 win at VfB Stuttgart and qualified for the UEFA Champions League knockout stages. PSG were at risk of elimination after a disappointing league stage, with three losses and a draw, but were utterly dominant against an outclassed Stuttgart side as they confirmed their place in the playoffs. With six minutes gone, Bradley Barcola headed PSG in front after Desire Doue stood a cross up at the back post following a corner. Stuttgart probed for an equalizer, but PSG hit on the counterattack, Dembele tapping a Barcola pass into an
