South Africa might have suffered more Cricket World Cup semi-final heartache on Thursday, but coach Rob Walter believes they have laid a platform for the future with a core group of players after exceeding expectations in India.
Poor starts with the bat and ball cost the side in their tense three-wicket defeat to old foes Australia — the fifth time they have exited a World Cup in the semi-finals.
South Africa is to cohost the next ODI World Cup with Namibia and Zimbabwe in 2027, and Walter believes that they can improve further after having arrived in India under the radar and with little expectation of success.

“I’m excited,” he told reporters. “There’s huge scope for us to grow as a team and to play even better than we have. The majority of the people that are going to be on the journey [to the next World Cup] are still in the changing room.
“We’ve seen young guys at the end of the tournament with less than 15 games to their name stand up and really dominate in certain phases for the team,” he said. “Different people putting their hands up throughout the competition.”
Wicketkeeper-batsman Quinton de Kock announced that he would retire from the 50-over format before the tournament started, while 2027 might be too far off for 34-year-old batters David Miller, who made 101 in the semi-final, and Rassie van der Dussen.
However, most of the remainder of the squad should remain.
“We’ve seen guys play unbelievable cricket that probably surprised a lot of people in this [media] room and around the world,” Walter said. “I think that is what fuels them to come back and be better.”
Former South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn, who lost in the semi-finals in 2015, also believes there is cause for optimism.
“If you look at the stats overall, South Africa will walk away and say they ticked all the boxes they wanted to, but they just didn’t get over the line,” he told Cricinfo. “There will be some question marks, but overall they were fantastic. I didn’t think they would make the semi-finals when [fast bowler] Anrich Nortje was injured.”
Taiwan kept its hopes of advancing to the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) alive with a 9-1 victory over South Africa in a qualifier at the Taipei Dome last night, backed by solid pitching. Bouncing back from Friday’s struggles on the mound, when Taiwanese pitchers surrendered 15 runs to Spain, Team Taiwan kept the visiting team in check, allowing just one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The win was crucial for Taiwan, as a loss would have eliminated the team from contention for the next WBC. Starting pitcher Sha Tzu-chen (沙子宸) struck out one and allowed no hits, except for
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) is considering reducing its pitch clock by two seconds to help players better adjust to the rules applied at the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The proposal aims to shorten the pitch timer from 25 seconds to 23 seconds with the bases empty, and from 20 seconds to 18 seconds with runners on base. Currently, the WBC mandates that pitchers deliver a pitch every 18 seconds with the bases empty and 15 seconds with runners on base. The issue was raised during a pre-season CPBL managers’ meeting on Tuesday by Rakuten Monkeys bench and batting
‘SETTING THE TONE’: Donovan Mitchell said that their determination to dominate had nothing to do with past results, but was about a potential post-season clash The Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday boosted their NBA-best record with a 142-105 romp past the New York Knicks, tightening their grip on the Eastern Conference lead with an all-around dominant display. Donovan Mitchell scored 27 points to lead six Cavs players to score in double figures, connecting on five of seven three-pointers as Cleveland drilled 19 from beyond the arc. “I think the biggest thing was just try to set the tone early,” Mitchell said, adding that the determination to dominate had nothing to do with the Knicks’ first-round playoff win over the Cavs two seasons ago and everything to do with
