The Oklahoma City Thunder are a young, talented team on the rise. Defending NBA champions the Denver Nuggets showed them just how much work they have ahead to reach that elite level.
Nikola Jokic on Sunday had 28 points and 14 rebounds to help the Nuggets roll past the Thunder 128-95 for their third straight win to open the season.
“They’re defending champs, and they’re not that by fluke,” Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander said. “They play the right way on both ends of the floor and they are a really good basketball team. They came to play tonight. We weren’t good enough to compete against them.”

Michael Porter Jr had 20 points and nine rebounds, while Jamal Murray added 19 points and eight assists for the Nuggets, who shot 60.2 percent from the field.
Denver coach Michael Malone liked the energy his team brought.
“Winning a championship, the one thing you worry about is thinking we can just show up this year and we’re going to win, and that’s not the case,” he said. “This is a brand new season. What we did last year, although magical in nature, has nothing to do with this season and I think our players, the way they’re playing — it’s very early — but after three games, our guys are playing with the requisite mindset that you need to if you’re going to be a team that can try to win another championship.”

Oklahoma City’s Chet Holmgren was the No. 2 pick in last year’s draft, but he missed last season with a foot injury. He got a loud cheer when he was introduced with the starters in his first regular-season home game and delivered a team-leading 19 points.
Gilgeous-Alexander, a first-team All-NBA selection last season, scored just seven points on two-for-16 shooting. Denver’s Kentavious Caldwell-Pope was assigned to guard him.
“You’ve got to credit guys like Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who I think is an all-NBA defender,” Malone said. “You know, we asked him to guard the best players 82 regular season games and 20 playoff games last year and he’s totally committed to that. He understands that that’s his greatest gift to this basketball team.”
The Nuggets held the Thunder to 41.1 percent shooting overall.
“We know that we have to be a team that can travel, beat the best teams in the NBA on the road, and to do that you have to bring the defense, and I felt our defense tonight was outstanding across the board,” Malone said.
The Thunder opened the season with road wins over Chicago and Cleveland, and could have made an statement with a win over Denver.
Jokic made sure that did not happen. The two-time Most Valuable Player dominated the first half. He had 22 points, including a layup at the buzzer, to give Denver a 69-51 edge at the break.
Holmgren scored 17 points in the first half. Gilgeous-Alexander went none for 9 from the field and had three points before the break.
Elsewhere, the Kings edged the Lakers 132-127, the Warriors downed the Rockets 106-95, the 76ers spanked the Blazers 128-98, the Hawks beat the Bucks 127-110 and the Clippers crushed the Spurs 123-83.

Sumo is walking a “tightrope” as it prepares to stage events outside Japan for the first time in 20 years while also trying to preserve its ancient traditions, experts say. The sport is to hold exhibition tournaments in London in October and in Paris in June next year, the first time the Japan Sumo Association has been abroad since Las Vegas in 2005. Sports such as soccer, baseball and football play domestic games overseas in a bid to gain new fans in emerging markets. Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on Sunday poured in 35 points as the Thunder grabbed a bounce-back 118-108 victory in Portland to push their NBA-best record to 37-8. The Thunder, surprised by the short-handed Dallas Mavericks on Thursday, fended off a late surge from the Trail Blazers to snap their four-game winning streak. Jalen Williams scored 24 points and Isaiah Joe added 16 off the bench. Center Isaiah Hartenstein, back after a five-game absence with a calf injury, added 14 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and a big block. The Golden State Warriors on Wednesday withstood Oklahoma City star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 52-point outburst to beat the Western Conference leading Thunder 116-109. Andrew Wiggins scored 27 points and Warriors superstar Stephen Curry scored 17 of his 21 points in the second half as Golden State erased a double-digit deficit and pulled away late for the victory. “We just stayed solid,” said Curry, who entered the contest mired in a shooting slump and had just four points on one basket in the first half. “Just all-around effort.” The Thunder, fueled by 31 first-half points from Gilgeous-Alexander, led by as many as 14 in the
