Top National League Cy Young Award contender Zac Gallen on Thursday beat the San Diego Padres for the second straight start as Tommy Pham and Gabriel Moreno homered to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 3-1 victory in the opener of a four-game series between teams trying to keep their wild-card hopes from slipping away.
Each team had just three hits.
The Diamondbacks won their third straight and the Padres lost for the eighth time in 11 games.

Gallen (13-5) held the Padres to one run and three hits in 6-1/3 innings while striking out three and walking one. The right-hander beat the Padres 3-0 in his previous start on Saturday in Phoenix, Arizona, throwing six innings of four-hit ball with eight strikeouts.
Rookie reliever Justin Martinez, pitching in just his fifth game, earned a four-out save, his first. He walked two in the ninth inning before punching out Jake Cronenworth to end it.
“A beautiful experience just to have the opportunity, right, and that it actually happened is a blessing,” Martinez said via an interpreter.

Martinez was recalled from Triple-A Reno earlier in the day after a tough series at Colorado taxed the Diamondbacks’ bullpen.
“I’m really proud of him,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “Look, he got on a plane this morning in Reno and got here very, very early, and his world was probably spinning super fast. As thin as we were in the bullpen, he had no idea what were looking to do with him tonight, and he stepped up and did it, and it was fun for us to watch.”
“That was a pretty intense atmosphere. Our dugout erupted after that final strike was called,” Lovullo said. “We were all really excited for him. It was a good moment for this team. This team is playing good baseball. To be honest, we’re gassed. I know this group is very tired coming out of the altitude in Colorado. This was a fatigued team today that went out there and won a baseball game, and that’s what I’m most proud of.”
Arizona came into the night 1.5 games out of the third wild-card spot, while the Padres were 4.5 back. The Diamondbacks had been seven games above .500 on July 31 before losing nine straight, including the opener of a three-game series against the Padres in Phoenix last weekend.
They won the next two against the Padres and then took two of three at Colorado.
“We had taxed our bullpen pretty good the last couple of days, so this was a game I knew I had to go as far as I possibly should,” Gallen said. “I didn’t feel particularly sharp early. It was just trying to stay in counts, reduce some contact and get some outs.”
The Padres took two of three against the American League-leading Baltimore Orioles earlier this week, but have failed to play up to the expectations that come with having baseball’s third-highest payroll and making it to the National League Championship Series last year.
Rich Hill (7-13), a 34-year-old lefty acquired from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline, lost his third straight start for the Padres. He retired the first 10 Diamondbacks batters before walking Taiwanese-American outfielder Corbin Carroll with one out in the fourth inning. Pham then drove the next pitch to center field.
It was Pham’s fifth homer against the Padres in 15 games since the start of last season. He was with the Padres from 2020 to 2021.
Moreno sent a drive into the home-run porch in the right-field corner leading off the fifth.
Hill allowed three runs and two hits in five innings.
The Padres broke through against Gallen in the fifth inning. Cronenworth sent a drive to deep center that bounced off Alek Thomas’ glove as he and Pham, the left fielder, nearly collided. He scored on Trent Grisham’s single.
The top five in the Padres’ order went none for 17.
Elsewhere, the Dodgers downed the Brewers 1-0, the Nationals outscored the Red Sox 10-7, the Mariners sank the Royals 6-4 and the Mets mastered the Cardinals 4-2.

Shohei Ohtani and Clayton Kershaw on Friday joined their Los Angeles Dodgers teammates in sticking their fists out to show off their glittering World Series rings at a ceremony. “There’s just a lot of excitement, probably more than I can ever recall with the Dodger fan base and our players,” manager Dave Roberts said before Los Angeles rallied to beat the Detroit Tigers 8-5 in 10 innings. “What a way to cap off the first two days of celebrations,” Roberts said afterward. “By far the best opening week I’ve ever experienced. I just couldn’t have scripted it any better.” A choir in the
After fleeing Sudan when civil war erupted, Al-Hilal captain Mohamed Abdelrahman and his teammates have defied the odds to reach the CAF Champions League quarter-finals. They are today to face title-holders Al-Ahly of Egypt in Cairo, with the return match in the Mauritanian capital, Nouakchott, on Tuesday next week. Al-Hilal and biggest domestic rivals Al-Merrikh relocated to Mauritania after a power struggle broke out in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary force. The civil war has claimed tens of thousands of lives and displaced more than 12 million people, according to the UN. The Democratic Republic of the Congo-born Al-Hilal
Shohei Ohtani, Teoscar Hernandez and Tommy Edman on Thursday smashed home runs to give the reigning World Series champions the Los Angeles Dodgers a 5-4 victory over Detroit on the MLB’s opening day in the US. The Dodgers, who won two season-opening games in Tokyo last week, raised their championship banner on a day when 28 clubs launched the season in the US. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts shuffled his batting lineup with all four leadoff hitters finally healthy as Ohtani was followed by Mookie Betts, then Hernandez and Freddie Freeman in the cleanup spot, switching places with Hernandez. “There’s a Teoscar tax to
Matvei Michkov did not score on Monday, but the Philadelphia rookie had a hand in both goals as hosts the Flyers earned a 2-1 victory over the Nashville Predators. Ryan Poehling and Jamie Drysdale got the goals for the Flyers (31-36-9, 71 points), who won their third straight. Michkov and Travis Konecny assisted on both. Ivan Fedotov stopped 28 shots to earn his first win since March 1, ending a personal six-game losing streak. Zachary L’Heureux got the lone goal for Nashville.
