Max Scherzer’s debut with the Texas Rangers ended up being one of his favorite kind of starts. For the American League West leaders, it is the kind of result they hope to keep getting from the three-time winner of the Cy Young Award.
“You’re getting kind of beat around there in the early part of the game, but you settle in and you catch a rhythm, and you’re able to pitch deep into a ballgame,” Scherzer said. “That’s what I’m most happy about, I finished strong.”
Scherzer on Thursday struck out out nine over six innings, settling in after throwing 37 pitches in a three-run first as the Rangers rallied to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-3 and complete a three-game series sweep.

“He couldn’t have had worse luck there early. You know, every ball they hit found holes, but it just shows you how tough he is and what a great competitor he is. Logged a lot of pitches that first inning, but regrouped, reset,” Texas manager Bruce Bochy said.
Mitch Garver led off the Rangers’ fourth inning against Touki Toussaint (1-4) with a homer into the second deck of seats in left-center to tie the game at 3-3.
Three batters later, Marcus Semien homered for the second game in a row, his 17th of the season, a solo shot that put Texas ahead for good.
“That’s what’s fun, is when the whole team has kind of a hand in it,” Scherzer said. “Everybody kind of did their job today and we won as a team.”
Will Smith worked the ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances after Josh Sborz and Aroldis Chapman, the hard-throwing reliever acquired in a trade from Kansas City more than a month ago, worked scoreless innings.
Toussaint struck out nine and walked four in his 5-1/3 innings.
Tim Anderson and Andrew Benintendi both blooped opposite-field singles on 0-1 counts to open the game against Scherzer, who then got a strikeout before consecutive walks — the second to Yasmani Grandal to force in a run.
Scherzer (10-4) then had another strikeout and an 0-2 count before Gavin Sheets grounded a two-run single up the middle to put the White Sox up 3-0.
Acquired from the New York Mets in a trade last weekend and signed through next season, Scherzer allowed seven singles and walked two. He retired 13 of the last 14 batters he faced, with seven of his strikeouts coming in that span. A week after his 39th birthday, he threw 70 of 105 pitches for strikes, with 21 of those swing-and-miss strikes.
“Typical experienced star that ends up giving up three runs in the first, and kind of settles down and understands that he’s got to keep us right there and allow his team to come back,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “I was in the dugout saying: ‘Don’t panic, you’re OK. They’re not blasting you, not hitting home runs, it’s not the execution of pitches. They’re just finding holes. Just pitch and compete,’ and so it’s great when that happens.”
After Texas were retired on eight pitches in their first at-bat, Scherzer was right back on the mound. The White Sox then had three more singles in the second inning, although he benefited from a double-play grounder and an inning-ending strikeout to prevent any more runs.
“Once he got comfortable, found his groove and really started filling up the strike zone, it’s a huge difference,” said Garver, the catcher who also added an RBI single in the eighth inning. “He’s very passionate about what he does.”
Elsewhere, the Phillies mastered the Marlins 4-2, the Orioles battered the Blue Jays 6-1, the Giants downed the Diamondbacks 1-0, the Royals routed the Mets 9-2 and the Mariners sank the Angels 5-3.
The Dodgers defeated the Athletics 8-2, the Cubs tamed the Reds 5-3, the Yankees edged the Astros 4-3, the Twins beat the Cardinals 5-3 and the Brewers thrashed the Pirates 14-1.

Taiwan kept its hopes of advancing to the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) alive with a 9-1 victory over South Africa in a qualifier at the Taipei Dome last night, backed by solid pitching. Bouncing back from Friday’s struggles on the mound, when Taiwanese pitchers surrendered 15 runs to Spain, Team Taiwan kept the visiting team in check, allowing just one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The win was crucial for Taiwan, as a loss would have eliminated the team from contention for the next WBC. Starting pitcher Sha Tzu-chen (沙子宸) struck out one and allowed no hits, except for
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) is considering reducing its pitch clock by two seconds to help players better adjust to the rules applied at the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The proposal aims to shorten the pitch timer from 25 seconds to 23 seconds with the bases empty, and from 20 seconds to 18 seconds with runners on base. Currently, the WBC mandates that pitchers deliver a pitch every 18 seconds with the bases empty and 15 seconds with runners on base. The issue was raised during a pre-season CPBL managers’ meeting on Tuesday by Rakuten Monkeys bench and batting
‘SETTING THE TONE’: Donovan Mitchell said that their determination to dominate had nothing to do with past results, but was about a potential post-season clash The Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday boosted their NBA-best record with a 142-105 romp past the New York Knicks, tightening their grip on the Eastern Conference lead with an all-around dominant display. Donovan Mitchell scored 27 points to lead six Cavs players to score in double figures, connecting on five of seven three-pointers as Cleveland drilled 19 from beyond the arc. “I think the biggest thing was just try to set the tone early,” Mitchell said, adding that the determination to dominate had nothing to do with the Knicks’ first-round playoff win over the Cavs two seasons ago and everything to do with
