Three Taiwanese athletes yesterday won silver medals in the taekwondo at the FISU World University Games in Chengdu, China, while Taiwan also bagged a bronze medal in archery.
In the women’s under-46kg taekwondo final, Huang Ying-hsuan lost to Rita Bakisheva 2-1 to secure a silver medal.
The 19-year-old National Taiwan Sport University athlete opened her campaign with a 2-1 victory over Iran’s Saeideh Nasiridarounkola, before beating Indonesia’s Heni Prikasih 2-0 in the quarter-final. Huang then downed Azerbaijan’s Minaya Akbarova 2-0 in the semi-final.

Fellow National Taiwan Sport University athlete Lo Chia-ling lost 0-2 to South Korea’s Kim Yujin in the women’s under-57kg taekwondo final. The 21-year-old Taiwanese beat Thailand’s Phannapa Harnsujin in the round of 16, before defeating Iran’s Kosar Asaseh 2-0 and China’s Yang Junli 2-0.
In the men’s under-68kg taekwondo final, 21-year-old Chiu Yi-jui lost 2-0 to South Korea’s Lee Sangryeol. Chiu earlier beat Kazakhstan’s Bexultan Mussakhan 2-0, Azerbaijan’s Yashar Mammadli 2-0, Brazil’s Joao Diniz 2-0 and Turkey’s Ferhat Kavurat 2-0.
In archery, Taiwan’s Peng Chia-mao won the bronze medal in the women’s recurve, beating South Korea’s Lee Gahyun 6-2. Peng, 26, earlier in the day lost 6-5 in the semi-final to Kazakhstan’s Diana Tursunbek.

In table tennis, Taiwan’s men’s team blanked India 3-0 to qualify for the semi-finals, and the women’s team beat Thailand 3-2 in the quarter-finals. The women lost their semi-final 3-0 to China, while the men were tied 2-2 with Germany as of press time last night.
In judo, Taiwan’s Chang Ling-fang lost in the women’s over-78kg quarter-finals to Mongolia’s Nominzul Dambadarjaa after the Taiwanese received a direct hansoku-make for safety reasons. She went on to the repechage round, but lost to finish seventh.
