Talk about taking one for the team.
Belgian shot putter Jolien Boumkwo on Saturday suddenly had to become an expert in the 100m hurdles at the European Athletics Team Championships to avoid her side being disqualified.
Boumkwo clocked 32.81 seconds, finishing last in the race in Chorzow won by Spain’s Teresa Errandonea in 13.22 seconds after stepping in at the last moment to replace injured compatriot Anne Zagre, a specialist in the discipline. No other hurdler in the Belgian team was available and in the event of a no-show, Belgium would have been disqualified.

“My team is the most important thing for me,” 29-year-old Boumkwo said, dressed in tracksuit bottoms and towering over her rivals.
She had to step over the hurdles rather than jump, but finished with a huge smile having secured vital points for her struggling team.
“I couldn’t let it happen to lose by one point. That’s why I considered taking part in 100m hurdles. There was no risk for me if I took it calmly,” she said.
On Friday, Boumkwo, who is also Belgian hammer throw champion, finished seventh in the shot put competition played out as part of the European Games.
After 25 of 37 events and with just yesterday left on the program, Belgium were 16th and last, and faced relegation to the second division.

That tied the score, the Jets pulled it out in overtime and just about everyone involved got their money’s worth out of the 5-4 game. “We knew how we were both sitting in the standings and both having real good years,” Winnipeg coach Scott
Inter on Sunday were given a letoff when they snatched a late 1-1 derby draw with AC Milan, while league leaders SSC Napoli were held by a late goal at AS Roma. Reigning champions Inter remain three points behind Napoli, who looked to be heading five clear as they led in Rome until Angelino volleyed in a stunning leveler in the first minute of stoppage-time. Angelino’s strike gave even more significance to Stefan de Vrij’s last-gasp equalizer at the San Siro. The defender forced home Nicola Zalewski’s knockdown just as it looked like Tijjani Reijnders’ opener would be enough for Milan. “I can
