Katie Taylor got her homecoming on Saturday, but Chantelle Cameron got the win.
The Irish champion has helped elevate women’s boxing to new heights, but could not solve Cameron in a showdown of undisputed and undefeated champions. By a majority decision, Taylor suffered the first loss of her professional career.
Taylor, whose lightweight belts were not on the line, fell to a 22-1 win-loss record after the judges scored the Dublin fight 96-94, 96-94 and 95-95 in front of a stunned capacity crowd at 3Arena.

“It’s not how I wanted my homecoming to go,” Taylor said in the ring. “It was a tough battle, a grueling 10 rounds like I expected it to be. I just came up short tonight.”
The 2012 Olympic gold medalist had never fought professionally in Ireland. It was Taylor’s first defeat at any level since being eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Rio de Janeiro Games in 2016.
Cameron, who was inspired by Taylor to turn pro, remained the undisputed super lightweight champion.
The English fighter entered the ring first, even though her belts were at stake, and seemed unfazed by the fervent home fans. She bounced and stayed loose while Taylor soaked in the applause during a long ring walk.
“I came to Dublin, her homecoming, everyone was against me, everything was in favor of Katie but I showed what I’m about,” said Cameron, who enjoyed a cold beer at a post-fight news conference.
Once the bell rang, Cameron stalked Taylor and remained aggressive the whole way — throwing nearly twice as many punches. She used body shots to exhaust Taylor and jabs to outwork her.
In the sixth, they went toe-to-toe in the middle of the ring. Taylor fought hard, using combinations to counter Cameron’s greater weight and strength.
Cameron was pressuring enough by the eighth to make Taylor look in need of some big rounds, bBut amid chants of “Katie, Katie,” Cameron kept her off with uppercuts.
At the end of a contest that met the hype, both fighters jumped on their trainers’ shoulders and raised their arms.
Taylor has a rematch clause, and Cameron expects it to be in England. Taylor gambled by challenging Cameron to take the fight after Amanda Serrano backed out because of an injury. The 36-year-old Taylor moved up to Cameron’s 140-pound (63.5kg) division to entice her.
“Looking forward to the rematch,” she told Cameron in the ring.
Cameron said she would be interested in dropping down to lightweight to challenge for Taylor’s belts.
Cameron improved to 18-0 in what is instantly a career highlight for the heavy puncher, who had not planned to turn professional until she saw the success of Taylor and Claressa Shields.
Taylor last fought in Ireland as an amateur more than seven years ago.
There had been no elite-level boxing events in Ireland since gunmen opened fire during a weigh-in at a Dublin hotel in February 2016.
Authorities said the shooting was part of a feud between two drug trafficking gangs.
Juventus on Sunday stopped Inter from replacing SSC Napoli at the top of Serie A by beating their fierce rivals 1-0 and moving into the UEFA Champions League positions. Francisco Conceicao made sure that Napoli would stay two points ahead of reigning champions Inter by classily tucking home the winning goal 16 minutes before the end of an entertaining contest in Turin. Portugal attacker Conceicao netted his fourth goal of the season in all competitions after brilliant work from Randal Kolo Muani to give Juve a third straight league win. Juve are in fourth place on 46 points, ahead on goal-difference from SS
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) is considering reducing its pitch clock by two seconds to help players better adjust to the rules applied at the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The proposal aims to shorten the pitch timer from 25 seconds to 23 seconds with the bases empty, and from 20 seconds to 18 seconds with runners on base. Currently, the WBC mandates that pitchers deliver a pitch every 18 seconds with the bases empty and 15 seconds with runners on base. The issue was raised during a pre-season CPBL managers’ meeting on Tuesday by Rakuten Monkeys bench and batting
Taiwan kept its hopes of advancing to the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) alive with a 9-1 victory over South Africa in a qualifier at the Taipei Dome last night, backed by solid pitching. Bouncing back from Friday’s struggles on the mound, when Taiwanese pitchers surrendered 15 runs to Spain, Team Taiwan kept the visiting team in check, allowing just one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The win was crucial for Taiwan, as a loss would have eliminated the team from contention for the next WBC. Starting pitcher Sha Tzu-chen (沙子宸) struck out one and allowed no hits, except for
‘SETTING THE TONE’: Donovan Mitchell said that their determination to dominate had nothing to do with past results, but was about a potential post-season clash The Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday boosted their NBA-best record with a 142-105 romp past the New York Knicks, tightening their grip on the Eastern Conference lead with an all-around dominant display. Donovan Mitchell scored 27 points to lead six Cavs players to score in double figures, connecting on five of seven three-pointers as Cleveland drilled 19 from beyond the arc. “I think the biggest thing was just try to set the tone early,” Mitchell said, adding that the determination to dominate had nothing to do with the Knicks’ first-round playoff win over the Cavs two seasons ago and everything to do with
