Algeria’s Imane Khelif was also disqualified hours before her gold medal bout.
The 23-year-old was scheduled to meet Yang Liu in the 66kg division final, but Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng, who lost to Khelif in the semi-finals, would fight the Chinese instead.
“A boxer from Algeria Imane Khelif was excluded from the IBA World Boxing Championships due to the failure to meet the IBA eligibility criteria,” the governing body said in a statement. “The IBA upholds its rules and regulations as well as its athletes’ personal and medical privacy, the eligibility criteria breach therefore cannot be shared by the IBA.”
The Algerian Olympic Committee said that Khelif was disqualified for “medical reasons” and that it would support her preparation for the African qualification tournament for next year’s Paris Olympics.
Algerian media reported Khelif was disqualified for high level of testosterone in her system.
“There are some countries that did not want Algeria to win a gold medal,” the boxer told Algerian Ennahar TV.
“This is a conspiracy and a big conspiracy, and we will not be silent about it,” she said.
Nine Taiwanese participated in the championship, including Olympic bronze medalist Huang Hsiao-wen, who defeated France’s Delphine Mancini in the under-54kg quarter-finals to face Yeni Marcela Arias Castaneda of Colombia in the final.
Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec has become a social media sensation for his nonchalance at the shooting range at the Paris Olympics. A former officer of the Turkish Gendarmerie, Dikec combined with Sevval Ilayda Tarhan to win the silver in the mixed team 10m air pistol event on Tuesday. However, it was the 51-year-old’s casual attire as he fired with his other hand in pocket at the Chateauroux Shooting Center that prompted the myriad of memes. “Be cool like Yusuf Dikec,” the French embassy in Turkey wrote in a post on X. While most pistol shooters wear visors, chunky ear-defenders and shooting lenses with a
While the International Olympic Committee does not give prize money to winners at the Paris Games, many nations and territories offer incentives to their athletes to come home with gold, silver or bronze. Many are financial, but the rewards can be more eclectic — anything from exemption from compulsory military service to cars, cows, apartments and even free food deliveries. In South Korea, an Olympic medal, of any color, grants athletes exemption from 18 months of compulsory military service, which all able-bodied males must undertake by the age of 28. A gold at the Asian Games does the same, which star soccer player

As Taiwan’s last pugilist to compete in Paris, two-time International Boxing Association (IBA) world champion Lin advanced to the quarter-finals by defeating Sitora Turdibekova of Uzbekistan by unanimous decision. Devastated former Olympic champion Carolina Marin yesterday withdrew in tears from her badminton semi-final after her right knee buckled in distressing scenes. Marin, who won women’s singles gold at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games, was on track to reach the final, but collapsed midway through the second game against China’s He Bingjiao. Coaches and He rushed to her side as she lay on the ground for several minutes, clutching her leg. She eventually got up and walked off the court then resumed wearing a support, but she could barely move, losing the next two points before falling to the ground again and
