Daniil Medvedev on Saturday beat fellow former world No. 1 Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4 in the Qatar Open final to win his second ATP title in a week.
The 27-year-old, who won in Rotterdam on Sunday last week, convincingly ended his 35-year-old opponent’s comeback heroics that saw Murray fight four three-set battles and overcome eight match points to reach the final in Doha.
Medvedev broke Murray’s first serve in each set as he remained unbeaten in three encounters between the two. His 17th career title should see him move up one place to seventh in the new world rankings.

Medevedev said both players struggled to find their rhythm in the wind, but also complained about new match balls used on the tour,
“Honestly now I can say this now that the tournament is over, and also I won, I think that these balls are not good for hard courts,” the Russian said.
“They changed something this year and I don’t like them. I heard a lot of other players are struggling with shoulders, elbows and wrists,” he said. “Myself I had wrist problems in Australia. Generally I think I was struggling all week to find the perfect rhythm with these balls, but I am happy to win.”

Medvedev fired down five aces, but also committed six double faults. Murray repeatedly shouted at himself and his support team after errors.
Medvedev had seemed to be cruising to victory in the second set until he was serving at 3-2 up with two game points. Murray fought back and produced a brilliant backhand winner to surge back into the clash at 3-3.
At 4-4, Murray was leading 40-0 in a bid to produce another shock, but the Scot let Medvedev get back into the game for the key break that decided the title.
“Daniil is one of my favorite players to watch and one of the best on the tour,” said Murray, who acknowledged he had been through an “amazing week”.
Murray is expected to rise from 70th to 52 in the world rankings.
However, he said that after his gruelling week he would speak with his team before deciding whether to compete in the Dubai tournament this week.
Murray saved three match points in his first round game and five against Czech challenger Jiri Lehecka in his semi-final. He spent more than 12 hours on court during his week in Doha. Conscious of his 2019 hip replacement surgery, he plans to see what toll that has taken.
“All were pretty tough matches physically, so at my age and with the conditions I do have to be mindful of those things,” he said. “Definitely there are some things to work on, but I am proud of my week and the work that me and my team have put in to get me back to this stage.”
Medvedev said thathe would fly to Dubai on Sunday to prepare for an event boosted by his second straight title, but was wary of the fact that he could meet world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semi-final.
“It is all about confidence and as it can come really fast it can go away really fast with one loss. I feel really great right now, but next week is a new challenge.”

Taiwan’s Hsu Yu-hsiou and South Korea’s Chung Yun-seong on Saturday won the men’s doubles final of the Bengaluru Tennis Open, rallying to beat India’s Anirudh Chandrasekar and N. Vijay Sundar Prashanth 3-6, 7-6 (9/7), 11-9.
The Taiwanese-South Korean duo had dominated in the early stages of the tournament, breezing through their first three matches without losing a single set.
However, facing stiffer competition in the final, the pair dropped the first three games on their way to losing the opening set 3-6.
They then kept the score neck-and-neck through much of the second set, before edging ahead to win 7-6 (9-7).
In a “super tiebreak” (played to 10 points) to decide the match, Hsu and Chung took a 9-6 lead, and then halted their opponents’ three-point rally to win 11-9.
Including this one, 23-year-old Hsu has now racked up one singles and five doubles titles on the ATP Challenger Tour, which serves as a stepping stone to the ATP Tour.
Tallon Griekspoor on Friday stunned top seed Alexander Zverev 4-6, 7-6 (7/5), 7-6 (7/4) in the second round at Indian Wells, avenging a devastating loss to the German at Roland Garros last year. Zverev, the world No. 2 who is heading the field of the prestigious ATP Masters event with No. 1 Jannik Sinner serving a three-month drugs ban, is the first Indian Wells men’s top seed to lose his opening match since Andy Murray in 2017. It was a cherished win for Griekspoor, who had lost five straight matches — including four last year — to the German. That included a five-setter
Five-time champion Novak Djokovic on Saturday tumbled out of the Indian Wells ATP Masters, falling in his first match to lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp as two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz advanced. “No excuses for a poor performance,” 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic said after 37 unforced errors in a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 defeat. “It doesn’t feel great when you play this way on the court,” he said. “But congratulations to my opponent — just a bad day in the office, I guess, for me.” Djokovic is just the latest in Van de Zandschulp’s string of superstar victims. Manchester United on Thursday settled for a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Europa League round-of-16 tie. United led on Joshua Zirkzee’s goal in the 58th minute, but the hosts equalized 12 minutes later after Bruno Fernandes’ hand ball and Mikel Oyarzabal sent Andre Onana the wrong way from the penalty spot. The Europa League could be a way for United to finish the season with a trophy after crashing out of the FA Cup on Sunday. A spot in the quarter-finals is to be on the line at Old Trafford in the second leg on Thursday next
Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday held their nerve to beat Liverpool 4-1 on penalties and reach the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after their tie finished one-apiece on aggregate, while Bayern Munich saw off Bayer 04 Leverkusen to complete a 5-0 win over both legs. Lamine Yamal and Raphinha fired Barcelona into the next round as the Catalans bested SL Benfica 3-1, and Inter booked a last-eight meeting with Bayern by seeing off Feyenoord 2-1. At Anfield, Ousmane Dembele netted the only goal of the night as PSG bounced back from Liverpool’s late winner last week to force the tie to extra-time and penalties. Maligned
