Borussia Dortmund on Sunday blew the Bundesliga title race wide open with a 4-1 win over Hertha BSC, but in-form striker Karim Adeyemi limped off clutching his hamstring in the first half.
The victory saw Dortmund pull level on points with league leaders Bayern Munich and high-flying Union Berlin, who were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Schalke 04 earlier on Sunday.
“We’re on a great run of form, and we want to keep riding this wave and see where it leads in the end,” Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus said.

Adeyemi’s injury made for a bittersweet evening, with the 21-year-old limping off almost in tears just minutes after putting his side on their way with a quickfire goal and assist.
Dortmund started a little sluggishly after their 1-0 UEFA Champions League win over Chelsea last week and Hertha could have taken the lead when Jessic Ngankam skimmed the bar early on.
Signal Iduna Park was soon bouncing, though, as Adeyemi gave Dortmund the lead with a brilliant backheel on 27 minutes. Adeyemi set up Donyell Malen for his side’s second with a brilliant cross four minutes later, but was already clutching his hamstring as he curled the ball into the penalty area.
After the match, Dortmund manager Edin Terzic said Adeyemi “would probably miss a few games,” but asked for “a little time” so the club could get an official diagnosis.
There was hope for relegation-threatened Hertha when Lucas Tousart thundered the ball in off the bar just after halftime to halve Dortmund’s lead, but Dortmund overcame their nerves once more and Reus smashed a direct free-kick into the top corner to restore the two-goal cushion.
Julian Brandt made it four late on, linking with Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to score for a third league game in a row.
In one of the most intriguing Bundesliga title races for years, Dortmund, Union and Bayern are now all on 43 points after Bayern’s surprise defeat to Borussia Moenchengladbach on Saturday.
“There’s a long way to go yet, not just for us, but also for Union and Bayern,” Brandt said.
In Sunday’s late game, a late penalty from Danish forward Marcus Ingvartsen helped FSV Mainz 05 record a valuable 3-2 victory away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
In a fiery encounter, which saw 10 yellow cards, Amine Adli was shown straight red for bringing down Silvan Widmer in the penalty area after 81 minutes, with Ingvartsen stepping up to break the deadlock.
The victory saw Mainz leapfrog Bayer Leverkusen into ninth place, inflicting a third loss in four games on the hosts.
Union missed the opportunity to leapfrog Bayern into first place with a miserable 0-0 draw at home to bottom club Schalke.
Schalke have now battled to a league record four goalless draws in a row and they frustrated Union with another dogged performance.
In a torturous first half for spectators, the only moment of relief came when Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann pulled off a brilliant reflex save to deny Danilho Doekhi.
Schalke looked the more dangerous side in the second half, with Union appearing to be running on empty after their UEFA Europa League draw with Ajax on Thursday last week.
US international Jordan Pefok missed a chance to snatch a late winner when he skied a tough chance high over the bar from close range on 81 minutes.
“It’s normal that we have the odd game like this and Schalke played really well. We know every point is important and I am happy that we are still unbeaten this year,” Union captain Christopher Trimmel said.
Union remain in the title race ahead of their clash with th reigning champions in Munich at the weekend, while Schalke are still six points adrift of safety, having not won in the league since November last year.
No team in the CPBL can surpass the Taipei Dome attendance record set by the CTBC Brothers, except when the Brothers team up with Taiwanese rock band Mayday. A record-high 40,000 fans turned out at the indoor baseball venue on Saturday for Brothers veteran Chou Szu-chi’s first farewell game, which was followed by a mini post-game concert featuring Mayday. This broke the previous CPBL record of 34,506 set by the Brothers in early last month, when K-pop singer Hyuna performed after the game, and the dome’s overall record of 37,890 set in early March, which featured the Brothers and the
When Wang Tao ran away from home aged 17 to become a professional wrestler, he knew it would be a hard slog to succeed in China’s passionate but underdeveloped scene. Years later, he has endured family disapproval, countless side gigs and thousands of hours of brutal training to become China’s “Belt and Road Champion” — but the struggle is far from over. Despite a promising potential domestic market, the Chinese pro wrestling community has been battling for recognition and financial stability for decades. “I have done all kinds of jobs [on the side]... Because in the end, it is very
Nick Castellanos, Trea Turner and Kody Clemens homered on Wednesday as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Chicago Cubs 9-6 and clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs. Castellanos had three hits and scored three times. Bryson Stott also had three hits and Brandon Marsh drove in three runs for the Phillies, who on Monday claimed their first National League East title in 13 years. Coupled with the Milwaukee Brewers’ 2-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia secured the bye and home-field advantage in the NL Division Series. The Phillies owned the tiebreaker with the Brewers after winning the season series against the
With a quivering finger, England Subbuteo veteran Rudi Peterschinigg conceded the free-kick that sent his country’s World Cup quarter-final into extra-time before smashing his plastic goalkeeper on the floor in frustration. In the genteel southern English town of Tunbridge Wells, 300 elite players have gathered to play the game they love. “I won’t say this is the best weekend I’ve ever had in my life, but it’s certainly in the top two,” said Hughie Best, 58, who flew in from Perth, Australia, to compete and commentate at the event. Tunbridge Wells is the “spiritual home” of Subbuteo, which was invented there in 1946
