Taiwan’s Chen Nien-chin on Friday won gold at the Golden Belt Series Marrakesh in Morocco by a unanimous decision over Brazilian star Beatriz Iasmim Soares Ferreira. The 25-year-old Chen faced Soares, 30, in the women’s 63kg to 66kg welter final and secured a 5-0 decision over the 2020 Summer Olympics women’s lightweight silver medalist to snag gold at the tournament. Chen’s performance was backed up by a unanimous 5-0 decision over Nadezhda Rya-bets of Kazakhstan in their semi-final. Led by coach Ko Wen-ming, Chen was one of seven Taiwanese boxers at the tournament, with 25-year-old standout Wu Shih-yi clinching silver after a 5-0 defeat against Nadezhda Golubeva of Russia in the women’s 57kg to 60kg lightweight finals. Taiwan’s Liu Chien-ling also won silver after a 5-0 defeat to Kazakh boxer Alua Balkibekova in the women’s 45kg to 48kg minimum weight final. Lin Yu-ting and Huang Yu-ting both won bronze in the women’s 54kg to 57kg featherweight and women’s 60kg to 63kg light welterweight respectively.

Chess great Magnus Carlsen on Friday quit the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in New York after governing body FIDE barred the Norwegian from participating in a round at the tournament for wearing jeans. FIDE said in a statement that its dress code regulations were designed to “ensure professionalism and fairness for all participants.” It issued Carlsen a US$200 fine and gave him an opportunity to change into the correct attire, which the world No. 1 rejected, it said.
