Taiwanese Olympic gold medalist Kuo Hsing-chun on Thursday clinched two silver medals in the women’s under-59kg division at the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships in Bogota, Colombia.
In a tight event in which the top five finishers had combined snatch and clean and jerk lifts within 5kg of each other, Colombia’s Yenny Alvarez pulled off a surprise, winning gold with a combined lift of 234kg, topping Kuo for gold.
Kuo, the defending world and Olympic champion in the weight class, settled for silver with a combined lift of 232kg, edging out Maude Charron of Canada (231kg), Luo Shifang of China (230kg) and Luo Xiaomin of China (229kg).

The 29-year-old Taiwanese, who holds the world record in the weight class with a combined lift of 247kg set in April last year at the Asian Championships, had defeated Alvarez at last year’s World Championships with a combined lift of 230kg to Alvarez’s 226kg.
Kuo also took silver in the clean and jerk with a lift of 130kg, 3kg less than Alvarez.
Kuo was successful on her first lift of 126kg, but a miss at 129kg on her second attempt meant she needed her third attempt, at 130kg, to win the silver medal.
In the snatch, Kuo finished tied for third at 102kg, but Kamila Konotop of Ukraine took the bronze because she weighed less than Kuo.
At the IWF World Championships, medals are awarded for the snatch, clean and jerk, and combined total.
Kuo was competing in her first international competition this year and the first since winning gold at the worlds in December last year.
She has 10 gold, seven silver and two bronze medals at the worlds in her career.
