Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is set to defy FIFA’s campaign for captains to wear only official armbands with selected slogans at FIFA World Cup games.
“Yes,” the veteran goalkeeper said when asked at the Germany training camp about overriding a new FIFA project backed by UN agencies.
Denmark is also not backing down, playmaker Christian Eriksen said on Saturday.

The project’s launch a day before the opening World Cup match seemed designed to supplant a pledge by European teams to wear their own armbands as part of a Netherlands-led anti-discrimination campaign drawing attention to host nation Qatar’s laws and record on human rights issues.
World Cup rules require that equipment such as captains’ armbands must be authorized and provided by FIFA, but Neuer said he would wear the “One Love” design even if it comes with a fine.
“It’s good that we have the power with other nations in western Europe,” Neuer said.

Although Germany does not play until Wednesday, against Japan, three teams that joined the One Love campaign in September are to play on Monday: England, the Netherlands and Wales.
FIFA did not directly address the Europeans’ request several weeks ago for permission to wear the heart-shaped, multi-colored logo, then unveiled its proposal on Saturday.
FIFA’s choice of slogans for group games include “SaveThePlanet,” “ProtectChildren” and “ShareTheMeal.”
“These campaigns have taken into account feedback received from our member associations who, like FIFA, are committed to using the power of football to effect positive change around the world,” the soccer body said.
The slogan “NoDiscrimination” — the only one that aligns with the European teams’ wish — is scheduled to appear at the quarter-final stage.
“Obviously the short notice is surprising,” Germany team director Oliver Bierhoff said within 2 hours of the announcement. “It looks as if FIFA doesn’t have a clear stance.”
Denmark starts tomorrow against Tunisia, and captain Simon Kjaer should be wearing the One Love armband.
“What the consequences will be, I don’t know,” Eriksen said at a news conference where he wore a plain black T-shirt for practice.
Denmark has the option of playing in a black game jersey, the color of mourning for migrant workers who died helping build infrastructure needed for hosting the tournament.
Denmark sporting director Peter Moller described the timing of FIFA’s announcement as “a little bit strange.”
“We think the [armband] that we are playing with is an even stronger statement,” Moller said.
Not even a tense tete-a-tete in the gold-medal game on Friday could spoil the vibe at Paris’ biggest beach party. Canada’s Brandie Wilkerson and Brazil’s Ana Patricia got into a shouting match on either side of the net in the tiebreaking third set of the beach volleyball final of the Paris Olympics. The referee tried to keep the peace, but it was the Eiffel Tower Stadium DJ who cooled tempers on the sand by playing John Lennon’s Imagine over the PA system. The players laughed and clapped, the crowd applauded and sang along, Wilkerson was shown a yellow card and the top-ranked Brazilians
China yesterday celebrated one of its best Olympic performances, while some supporters declared China the true winners, if medals won by Hong Kong and self-ruled Taiwan were included. “We are number one out of sovereign countries,” read one comment with more than 1,300 likes on Sina Weibo. Many similar posts included images of an adjusted medal table with medals won by Hong Kong and Taiwan added to the Chinese total. Since Taiwan’s Olympic debut in 1956, its athletes have competed as “Formosa,” “Taiwan,” “the Republic of China,” and since 1984 as “Chinese Taipei.” Hong Kong competes separately from China. Team China racked up 40 gold
UNDISPUTED: How much work China put in was clear and they deserved their gold medal without a doubt, US’ silver-medal-winning athlete Jamie Czarkowski said China took gold in the artistic swimming team event on Wednesday night at the Paris Olympics, with the US getting silver and Spain taking bronze. China dominated in the absence of Russia, which had won every gold medal in artistic beginning with the 2000 Sydney Games. China finished with 996.1389 points, ahead of the US’ 914.3421 and Spain’s 900.7319. It was the first US medal in the sport since 2004. It was a big medal for China, and also a step forward for the sport, which changed its name from synchronized swimming several years ago to update its image. Some swimmers still call
Police in Beijing said they had arrested a woman for posting defamatory online comments about athletes and coaches after the women’s singles table tennis final at the Paris Olympics. The 29-year-old woman, surnamed He, “maliciously fabricated information and openly slandered others,” the Public Security Bureau of Beijing’s Daxing District said in a statement on Sina Weibo on Tuesday. The statement did not say which athletes and coaches had been targeted, and the case remains under investigation, police said. However, the arrest followed the women’s singles table tennis finals in Paris on Sunday, police said. That match saw Chen Meng take gold in an all-China
