Australia batsman and cricket commentator Dean Jones, who had been covering the Indian Premier League from Mumbai, has died after a heart attack aged 59, broadcaster Star India said on Thursday.
“It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing away of Mr Dean Mervyn Jones,” the company said in a statement. “He died of a sudden cardiac arrest. We express our deep condolences to his family and stand ready to support them in this difficult time.”
One of Australia’s most popular cricketers, Jones played 52 Tests, scoring 3,631 runs, and 164 one-day internationals in the 1980s and 1990s, winning the World Cup in 1987.

The attacking player was renowned for his exploits in the 50-over game, where he scored 6,068 runs.
The Victorian’s most memorable innings was in 1986, when he struck 210 in the blistering heat of Chennai during cricket’s second-ever tied Test.
“One hour into day 2 I knew I was in trouble,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “I didn’t drink anything apart from a cup of tea or coffee. We didn’t know anything about dehydration and rehydration back then. Then I just batted from memory basically. I can’t remember much from 120 on.”
Later he coached in the Pakistan Super League and was also a widely traveled commentator.
“Dean Jones was a hero to a generation of cricketers and will forever be remembered as a legend of this great game,” Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings said in a statement. “This is a truly sad day. Deano’s loss will be felt not just at home in Australia, but across the globe.”
Jones’ former Australia captain, Allan Border, said he was “genuinely shattered” by the news.
“He was simply just a good mate that always had my back. We’d stayed close post-cricket and only talked this morning about a fun project that we were going to get involved in,” Border told the Sydney Morning Herald.
Australia head coach Justin Langer said that Jones was “one of the great players and personalities in a golden time for the game.”
“His role in the team’s World Cup win in 1987 and the 1989 Ashes under A.B. [Border] were a huge turning point for Australian cricket,” Langer said.
The Indian Premier League, where Jones was part of the official broadcasting team, said that his “energy and enthusiasm for the game will be truly missed.”
Co-commentator Brett Lee was with Jones when he collapsed at the hotel and had performed CPR on his fellow countryman in a bid to revive him, Australian media reported.
Hours later, Lee made an emotional tribute to the iconic player in a pre-game show before the IPL match between Kings XI Punjab and the Royal Challengers Bangalore, calling him an “absolute legend.”
The father of two was a colorful character known for his outspoken views. A popular figure in Indian media, he had his own show, Prof Deano, on news network NDTV.
“Shocked to hear about the tragic loss of Dean Jones. Praying for strength and courage to his family and friends,” India skipper Virat Kohli wrote on Twitter.
The Rakuten Monkeys on Sunday downed the CTBC Brothers 2-1, handing the hosts their second consecutive loss in the best-of-seven CPBL Taiwan Series at the Taipei Dome. Monkeys’ ace starter Pedro Fernandez of the Dominican Republic dominated on the mound, cruising through six scoreless innings before giving up a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning. He gave up only three hits and walked two batters in a 93-pitch outing, giving his Taoyuan-based team an edge. Offensively, the Monkeys’ leadoff batter Lin Li hit Brothers starter Brandon Leibrandt’s pitch over the center-field wall in the game’s first at-bat,
The tiny village club of Mjallby AIF on Monday won the top tier Swedish soccer league with a 2-0 away win at IFK Gothenburg, sealing the title with three rounds of matches remaining. Jacob Bergstrom and Tom Pettersson scored the goals in Mjallby’s 20th win in 27 league games. Mjallby has a population of fewer than 1,400 people and plays in an outdated 6,000-seat stadium with stands weathered by the winds of the Baltic Sea. “It’s a huge relief to experience this now, a relief with three games to go,” said Anders Torstensson, a former army officer and secondary-school teacher who coaches the
Rafael Leao on Sunday shot AC Milan to the top of Serie A with a brace in a 2-1 win over ACF Fiorentina who were enraged by the “scandalous” awarding of the penalty that decided the game. Portugal winger Leao pushed Milan one point ahead of local rivals Inter, SSC Napoli and AS Roma with a coolly taken spot-kick, given for what looked like a soft foul on Santiago Gimenez by Fabiano Parisi, with four minutes remaining. That goal capped a fine first league start of the season for Leao and came after he drew the hosts level with a brilliantly struck
Jahmyr Gibbs was offered oxygen on the bench after a 78-yard run. He turned it down. Clearly, he was not out of breath. Gibbs on Monday scored on a long sprint in the second quarter, a five-yard spinning plunge in the third and accounted for a career-high 218 yards from the scrimmage to lead the Detroit Lions in a 24-9 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. “You felt like this was coming,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said. “This has been building.” The Lions (5-2) bounced back from a loss as they have done flawlessly for nearly three years, extending their NFL-long streak of 51 games
