Zlatan Ibrahimovic and substitute Edinson Cavani both scored twice on Saturday as Paris Saint-Germain won their first trophy of the season by retaining the Coupe de la Ligue with a 4-0 win over 10-man SC Bastia.
Ibrahimovic, who missed last season’s final through injury, opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Sebastien Squillaci was sent off, and doubled the lead just before half-time. Cavani added more luster to the win in the closing stages of the match with a fine header and a cool finish at the end of a counterattack.
PSG are chasing an unprecedented quadruple, as Laurent Blanc’s side also made it to the Coupe de France final and lead the Ligue 1 standings. However, they will be without Ibrahimovic next week against Barcelona in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals and the Sweden striker will miss also miss four matches of the domestic season after receiving another ban for criticizing a referee.

“We are ready for Barcelona,” PSG president Nasser al-Khelaifi said.
Ibrahimovic has been in tremendous form recently, scoring a hat-trick in the 4-1 win over AS Saint-Etienne in the Coupe de France semi-finals last week and bagging 13 goals in his last seven appearances for club and country.
Once again, he was the man-of-the-match at the Stade de France.
With David Luiz and Thiago Motta both out with injuries, Serge Aurier returned to the PSG defense and Adrien Rabiot was given a starting role in midfield. In a tight start to the game, PSG created the first chance in the fourth minute when Ibrahimovic collected a long pass in the box following a free-kick from Ezequiel Lavezzi, but the tall Swede was flagged offside.
PSG had a penalty claim turn down soon after when Gael Danic touched the ball with his right arm inside the box. However, referee Benoit Bastien pointed to the spot in the 20th minute after Squillaci brought Ezequiel Lavezzi down, with the former Arsenal player receiving a straight red card for his foul.
Second on PSG’s all-time top goalscorers list behind Pedro Pauleta with 104 goals, Ibrahimovic made no mistake from the spot, sending goalkeeper Alphonse Areola the wrong way with a shot in the top left corner.
Squillaci’s red card forced Bastia coach Ghislain Printant to change his strategy, with Mathieu Peybernes coming on for Danic. The move did not make a big difference as PSG took complete control of the match and overwhelmed Bastia in midfield.
Pegged back in their own half, Bastia fought back PSG’s relentless attacks for 20 minutes, but a poor headed clearance from Peybernes fell into Ibrahimovic’s path, with the Swede chesting down the ball before unleashing a low shot at the near post to double the lead.
PSG continued to apply pressure after the interval and went close in the 48th minute when Pastore saw his angled shot end just wide at the far post.
PSG goalkeeper Nicolas Douchez enjoyed a quiet evening and Florian Marange failed to convert Bastia’s first opportunity in the 56th minute, sending his header just wide.
Bastia tried everything in the closing stages of the game, but lacked a cutting edge and were caught on the break when Cavani struck a perfect header at the far post from Aurier’s cross to make it 3-0 with 10 minutes remaining.
Another PSG counterattack brought another goal in added time, with Cavani curling a shot past Areola from Ibrahimovic’s assist, PSG claiming their fifth Coupe de la Ligue.
“The match was over after 20 minutes following the penalty and the sending off,” Marange said. “We knew the referee would not make us any gift.”
Juventus on Sunday stopped Inter from replacing SSC Napoli at the top of Serie A by beating their fierce rivals 1-0 and moving into the UEFA Champions League positions. Francisco Conceicao made sure that Napoli would stay two points ahead of reigning champions Inter by classily tucking home the winning goal 16 minutes before the end of an entertaining contest in Turin. Portugal attacker Conceicao netted his fourth goal of the season in all competitions after brilliant work from Randal Kolo Muani to give Juve a third straight league win. Juve are in fourth place on 46 points, ahead on goal-difference from SS
Taiwan kept its hopes of advancing to the 2026 World Baseball Classic (WBC) alive with a 9-1 victory over South Africa in a qualifier at the Taipei Dome last night, backed by solid pitching. Bouncing back from Friday’s struggles on the mound, when Taiwanese pitchers surrendered 15 runs to Spain, Team Taiwan kept the visiting team in check, allowing just one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. The win was crucial for Taiwan, as a loss would have eliminated the team from contention for the next WBC. Starting pitcher Sha Tzu-chen (沙子宸) struck out one and allowed no hits, except for
The Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) is considering reducing its pitch clock by two seconds to help players better adjust to the rules applied at the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The proposal aims to shorten the pitch timer from 25 seconds to 23 seconds with the bases empty, and from 20 seconds to 18 seconds with runners on base. Currently, the WBC mandates that pitchers deliver a pitch every 18 seconds with the bases empty and 15 seconds with runners on base. The issue was raised during a pre-season CPBL managers’ meeting on Tuesday by Rakuten Monkeys bench and batting
‘SETTING THE TONE’: Donovan Mitchell said that their determination to dominate had nothing to do with past results, but was about a potential post-season clash The Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday boosted their NBA-best record with a 142-105 romp past the New York Knicks, tightening their grip on the Eastern Conference lead with an all-around dominant display. Donovan Mitchell scored 27 points to lead six Cavs players to score in double figures, connecting on five of seven three-pointers as Cleveland drilled 19 from beyond the arc. “I think the biggest thing was just try to set the tone early,” Mitchell said, adding that the determination to dominate had nothing to do with the Knicks’ first-round playoff win over the Cavs two seasons ago and everything to do with
