Five sports, including cricket and flag football, were included in the 2028 Los Angeles Games on Oct. 16 after gaining the approval of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Lacrosse, squash and baseball-softball had also been proposed by LA Games organizers for inclusion and received approval at an IOC meeting in Mumbai.

The five sports had already been given the nod from the powerful IOC Executive Board on Oct. 13, with the session on Oct. 16 approving its recommendation.
Cricket, which enjoys a massive following in India and has a fast growing global audience, returns to the Games after more than a century, having appeared once at the 1900 Olympics.
The LA Games proposal is for a six-team Twenty20 cricket tournament for men and women. T20 is a short format of the game.

The IOC hopes cricket’s inclusion will activate and engage a large, new Olympic audience, especially among Asian fans of the sport.
The annual Indian Premier League cricket tournament, with an estimated brand value of US$8.4 billion, is one of the richest leagues in the world across sports and continues to attract the world’s top players and coaches to India. The tournament is played in the same T20 format that the game will feature in during the LA 2028 games.
Flag football is a non-contact format of American football played by teams of five. American football last featured as a demonstration sport in 1932 LA Games.

Baseball has featured in several previous Games. It was added to the 2020 Tokyo program after being left off in 2012 and 2016, but it will not be a part of the Paris Games.
Softball, the female counterpart to baseball, has appeared at five previous editions of the Summer Games and was also left off the Paris agenda.
Lacrosse twice appeared as a medal sport at the Olympics, in 1904 and 1908. Lacrosse, IOC president Thomas Bach said, is “the sport, if I may say, of the First Nations of the US.”
Each team sport added will have six-nation competitions for men and women.
While all five sports’ inclusion is only for one edition of the Games, they are banking on the boost provided by Olympic participation to spur growth as they look to remain an attractive Olympic product going into the next four-year cycle.
The board also confirmed weightlifting and modern pentathlon (fencing, swimming, riding, shooting and running) have retained their places after overcoming uncertainty about their Olympic status for doping and sporting reasons, respectively.
Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian actress to win an Oscar, joined the IOC on Oct. 17 after being voted in as a member at a ceremony in Mumbai.
Before the vote, Britain’s Princess Anne, the chair of the IOC’s member election committee, introduced Yeoh as “a Malaysia junior squash champion.”
She was one of eight new proposed members to join the Olympic body at its session in the Indian financial capital.
“I remember when someone asked me, how did you become an actress? I always said, ‘I never dreamt of being an actress, but as a child I always dreamt of being an Olympian,’” a beaming Yeoh told reporters after taking the oath as an IOC member.
“Sports was very much part of my life growing up, I was very much involved with squash, athletics, swimming and diving.”

Instagram is changing the default privacy settings for many US teenagers, part of an effort to keep them safer and give parents more control over how their kids interact online. The new settings will make teen accounts private by default, limit who those users can send private messages to, and put teens in the “most restrictive” tier when it comes to viewing sensitive content. That means the app will block teens from seeing sensitive photos and videos, including posts that show people fighting or certain cosmetic procedures. These more restrictive settings will be turned on automatically for all Instagram users under 18
Located in the picturesque mountains of eastern Spain, the small town of Bunol might appear to be just another idyllic place in the Spanish countryside. However, it is home to one of the world’s most popular food fights. Each August, tens of thousands of people from all around the globe swarm into Bunol to take part in La Tomatina. On the last Wednesday of August, you will find the streets of Bunol full of people eagerly waiting to hear the blast of a cannon. This signifies the start of La Tomatina, an event where participants hurl thousands of pounds of tomatoes
Get ready to spin on your head -- “breaking” is set to make its Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games! Often referred to as breakdance or breakdancing, breaking was born in the streets of New York City during the early 1970s. It began as a way for African-American and Latin youths to express their narratives and struggles through astonishing spins and movements. B-boys and b-girls, also known as breakers, frequently compete in cyphers: events where they take turns showcasing their dance moves within a circle of spectators. Breaking comprises four main elements: toprock, downrock, power moves, and freezes. Toprock consists
